This year, we asked young artists in our city to create a work of art that was inspired by illustrations found in children’s literature. Winners were announced on March 8, 2024, and their artwork was displayed in the new art gallery at Jefferson Branch Library through the end of the month. The following art pieces won our first, second, and third place prizes for submissions by participants ages 13-18. Congratulations to our winners!
First Place
“The Hero of Pasadena”
by Olivia Salcedo, age 15
Marker, Pencil & Pen, 7.5 x 10.5 in.
Following the theme “Children’s Book Illustrations” perfectly, this drawing of a hero wearing a green cape with the Pasadena rose logo as a friendly companion sits beside them feels like a sneak peek at the next super-kid comic bestseller. Excellent!
Second Place
“Bea & Bonnie”
by Ruth Klinman, age 14
Watercolor & Acrylic, 9 x 11 in.
A gorgeous piece created with a clever mixture of watercolor and acrylic, judges loved the adorable bear and rabbit duo. The yellow and orange on the right perfectly complimented the purple and blue on the left – these details earned this piece second place in this year’s contest. Congratulations!
Third Place
“Apple”
by Taylor Wu, age 15
Digital, 8.5 x 11 in.
This digital illustration is reminiscent of a story that promises “one bite, and all of your dreams will come true.” The rippling effect in the pool of poison below the famous apple is skillfully done, as is the shine detail on the eye of the apple. Awesome work!
