This year, we asked young artists in our city to create a work of art that was inspired by illustrations found in children’s literature. Winners were announced on March 8, 2024, and their artwork was displayed in the new art gallery at Jefferson Branch Library through the end of the month. The following art pieces won our first and second place prizes for participants ages 8-12. Congratulations to our winners!

First Place

“Feed Your Brain”
by Nairi Janoyan, age 8
Watercolor, 9 x 12 in.

This flat collage made with watercolor features a vending machine containing an assortment of children’s books including “Vampires Don’t Wear Polkadots” and author Judy Blume. Very clever and creative, it was a no brainer that “Feed Your Brain” won this year’s first place prize. Well done!

Second Place

“Patterns of Emotions and Chaos”
by Bailey Goldberg, age 9
Digital, 8.5 x 11 in.

Amazing details can be seen throughout this digital illustration representing a range of emotions in all the colors of the rainbow. In particular, the landscape that can be seen in the face of the figure that stares out is imaginative and striking. Incredible work!
