Can you balance a shoe on the tip of your nose? Well that was just one of the many whimsical antics enjoyed by dozens of children and their caregivers at the annual “End of Summer Reading Bash” held at Jefferson Branch Library, where the entertainment included giant bowling, an art show, tennis racket juggling, and much more.
“Summer Reading” is a turn of phrase that elicits nostalgic memories for many people who grew up with libraries. Branches around the country continue to uphold the beloved tradition by offering prizes for completing special reading challenges. This year there were several delightful incentives on offer, such as free books, crafts, tote bags, and gift cards to local businesses.
With autumn around the corner, Pasadena Public Library decided to close this year’s “Summer Reading” program the same way it opened it: with a party. Patrons braved the heat to play carnival games and make seed balls for their home gardens. Kids and teens who competed in the “Upcycle Art” competition got to see their creations on display in Jefferson’s ‘Teen Room’ where materials that many would consider trash were repurposed as works of art. In this exhibit, attendees could find angler fish with teeth created from plastic forks, a castle with a defensive wall made of colorful straws, and many other innovative projects. The winners posed for photos with their shiny ribbons, and talked to an enthralled audience about the inspiration behind their work.
The highlight of the afternoon was none other than the talented Michael Rayner (aka. “Brokenjuggler” on Instagram) who wowed onlookers with his impressive feats of dexterity. There were no strings attached as Mr. Rayner balanced a variety of objects on his nose from a four year old’s shoe to a music stand, and generally juggled anything that wasn’t nailed down. Audience members of all ages laughed themselves silly as they were asked to participate in the act (with surprisingly successful results).
What’s next for Pasadena Public Library? Just because “Summer Reading” is over for the year doesn’t mean there isn’t still plenty of fun to be had. Please visit any of our branches to find out more about “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” or you can read about it on our blog here. We can’t wait to see everyone back at Jefferson Branch on October 11th for our next big event, “Art Night!”
