Preschool Storytime – Trains

Today was our One City One Story Day celebrating Christina Baker Kline’s Orphan Train.  There was an amazing Lionel train set up in our main hall that young ones (and young at heart) loved.  Of course, we continued that theme into Storytime.

Books We Shared

We began storytime with a tale of two trains – Whoosh and Chug! by Sebastien Braun.  Chug is a slow, steady engine.  Whoosh is a fast passenger train who often teases Chug.  But guess who comes right to the rescue when Whoosh needs it?

For our second story we took a train ride thanks to Window Music by Anastasia Suen, illustrated by Wade Zahares.  We started by giving our ticket to the conductor, and then traveled through beautiful scenery to get to our city destination.  All accompanied by the music from the train and outside.

Flannelboard Story

We had lots of fun counting and rhyming with our flannelboard story:

Clickety-clack, clickety-clack,
Here comes the train on the railroad track!

Clickety-clunn, clickety-clunn,
Here comes ENGINE number one.

Clickety-clew, clickety-clew,
Here comes COAL CAR number two.

Clickety-clee, clickety-cluee,
Here comes BOX CAR number three.

Clickety-clore, clickety-clore,
Here comes TANK CAR number four.

Clickety-clunn, clickety-clunn,
Here comes ENGINE number one.

Clickety-clunn, clickety-clunn,
Here comes ENGINE number one.

Clickety-clack, clickety-clack,
Here comes the train on the railroad track!

Song

Try this fun song at home, or when you see a train out and about!

The Wheels on the Train
(to the tune of: The Wheels on the Bus)
The wheels on the train go clickety-clack
Clickety-clack, clickety-clack
The wheels on the train go clickety-clack
All along the track

Other verses:
The whistle on the train goes toot, toot, toot…
The conductor on the train says, “Ticket, please!”…
The people on the train go bounce, bounce, bounce…
The engine on the train goes chug, chug, chug…

Movie We Watched

For the movie, we saw Peppa Pig’s Grandpa entertain all the kids in town with his Little Train.  And remember, it’s not a toy!

Jennifer Driscoll

Jennifer D. is a Senior Librarian of Youth Services . When she was young, she was once grounded for reading too much. Things haven’t changed much since then and she loves escaping into a good story. When she’s not reading she enjoys watching old musicals, scouring flea markets, taking way too many photos and letterpressing. If she could have any pet she wanted she would have a wombat or a manatee.
