Our library butterfly joined in the fun!

What follows are the books, songs, rhymes, flannel board stories, movement activities and video we shared.

BOOKS WE SHARED

Lenny in the Garden by Ken Wilson-Max can be read or sung aloud!  At the book’s opening, we meet Lenny and his momma in their garden.  They encounter all types of bugs there but the question is:  How do they find them?  They sing a little song that goes like this:

“Mr. Ant, Mr. Ant…Where are you?”

“Here I am, here I am!  How do you do?”

(Listen to the video clip below for the tune.)

The song moves through more bugs (snails, butterflies, bees, grasshoppers…) until we finally get to Lenny.  Well Lenny isn’t a bug, he’s a boy, but his mom sings the song to find him.  A great book for teaching insect identification and for keeping infants engaged through the story’s visuals and the catchy tune.

Butterfly, Butterfly by Petr Horacek is a beautifully written and illustrated picture book about a girl named Lucy who sees a gorgeous butterfly in her garden.  As quickly as it came, it disappeared!  On her quest to find it again, she runs into all sorts of insects but the butterfly is nowhere to be found.  Does she ever find that butterfly?  You’ll have to read the story to find out!  (P.S.  There is a beautiful surprise at the very end of the book.)

FLANNELBOARDS WE SHARED

We used our magic to make five butterflies appear today!

This was our special rhyme:

Five little caterpillars spinning cocoons,

Hoping spring would come here soon!

With a little bit of magic (wiggle fingers up and down)

And the warm sunshine… (make a circle with arms overhead)

Clap, clap, clap…here’s a butterfly  (clap hands 3X for each butterfly to appear)

Five Little Butterflies

Five little butterflies on flowers galore,

One flew away and then there were four.

Four little butterflies among the sweet peas,

One flew away and then there were three.

Three little butterflies with nothing to do,

One flew away and then there were two.

Two little butterflies sitting in the sun,

One flew away and then there were none!

10 Little Ladybugs (to tune of Ten Little Indians)

One little, two little, three little ladybugs,

Four little, five little, six little ladybugs,

Seven little, eight little, nine little ladybugs…

Ten little ladybugs here!
