Our 5th storytime of the summer session was all about Butterflies!  We actually spent quite a bit of time playing hide and seek with some missing butterflies.  Here are the books, songs, rhymes, flannel stories and activities we shared.

Books We Shared

In Butterfly Butterfly by Petr Horacek, a young girl named Lucy encounters a beautiful butterfly in her garden.  The next day she comes out to see her butterfly but she can’t find it anywhere!  While she’s looking she runs into a pink earthworm, a brown spider, a red ladybird and many more creatures. When she finally gives up her search and lies down on the grass, the beautiful butterfly reappears in all of it’s 3-D glory!

Emma Parrish’s Flutterby Butterfly is a bit like hide and seek.  We are looking for a butterfly named Flutterby but we end up finding a tortoise, a snail, a scarecrow…everything BUT our butterfly.  No surprise that Flutterby waits until the final page to pop up for us!  A colorful, fun board book that has the element of guessing, identification and surprise.  Perfect for infants and toddlers.

Flannel Boards ~ Nursery Rhyme

Baa Baa Black Sheep

Baa, baa, black sheep, have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full!

One for the master,
One for the dame,
And one for the little boy
Who lives down the lane.

Baa, baa, black sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir,
Three bags full…

Rhymes & Bounces & Songs We Shared

We sing a lot of songs during storytime!  You’ll find lyrics to those songs without music here.

Welcome Song
(to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)

Welcome, welcome everyone
Now we’re here, let’s have some fun!
First we clap our hands just so
Then we bend and touch our toes
Welcome, welcome everyone
Now we’re here, let’s have some fun!

Dickery Dickery Dare (bounce)
(to the tune of Hickory Dickory Dock)

Dickery dickery dare,
The pig flew up in the air, (woo!)
The man in brown, brought him back down,
Dickery dickery dare!

Grand Old Duke of York (bounce)

Click here for video:  Grand Old Duke of York

The grand old Duke of York
He had 10,000 men
He marched them up to the top of the hill (lift baby up)
And he marched them back again (place baby on lap)
And when they’re up, they’re up  (lift baby up)
And when they’re down, they’re down (place baby on lap)
But when they’re only half way up (bring baby halfway up)
They’re neither up nor down! (lift baby up and down)

You are My Sunshine (song)

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You’ll never know dear, how much I love you
And I love you more every day…

Round and Round the Garden (tickle)

Round and round the garden, goes the teddy bear, a one step, a two step, a tickle under there!
