Shiver me timbers!  We had some pirate fun during our final Toddler Storytimes of the fall session – AARRRGH!  After reading a book about some little pirates taking a bubble bath, we blew some bubbles and tried to catch them while listening to the Gymboree song:  Bubbles, Bubbles.

I really had a wonderful time sharing stories, songs, rhymes and activities each Tuesday with all of these beautiful toddlers & their families.  Registration for our winter session of Toddler Storytimes will be held on Tuesday, January 10th – 9 a.m. for Pasadena residents; 11 a.m. for nonresidents!  Hope to see you then!

Books We Shared

pirates-bubblespi-rat

In Jarett J. Krosoczka’s Bubble Bath Pirates , a pirate mommy tells her little pirates that it’s time to “walk the plank” and take a bath!  Action, bold visuals and pirate banter make this a great book to keep toddlers engaged.

For our second story, we shared Maxine Lee’s Pi-Rat!  So if you couldn’t tell from the title, Pi-Rat is a rat who also happens to be a pirate!  This book makes a great read aloud or lap sit with an eclectic cast of animal characters, a bit of suspense and a fun twist at the end.

Pirate Pete’s Red Patch

(to the tune of Mary Wore Her Red Dress)

Pirate wore his red patch, his red patch, his red patch.

Pirate wore his red patch ALL DAY LONG!

(Switch Pirate Pete’s patch to another color – repeat with 4-6 more colors)

Pirate wore his green patch, his green patch, his green patch.

Pirate wore his green patch ALL DAY LONG!

(repeat with blue, yellow, pink, etc…)

Rhymes & Songs We Shared

We have a lot of fun doing songs and action rhymes at storytime!  Here are some of the ones we shared:

Welcome Song (tune: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)

Welcome, welcome everyone
Now we’re here let’s have some fun.
First we clap our hands just so
Then we bend and touch our toes
Welcome, welcome everyone
Now we’re here let’s have some fun.

Clap Everybody and Say Hello Sally Go Round the Sun CD by Kathy Reid-Naiman

Open shut them. (hands palms out with fingers stretched, then close into fists)
Give a little clap, clap, clap. (clap hands on each clap)
Open, shut them. (hands palms out with fingers stretched, then close into fists)
Open shut them. (hands palms out with fingers stretched, then close into fists)
Place them on your lap-lap-lap.  (pat lap three times)
Creep them, crawl them (creep fingers up from lap towards chin)
Creep them, crawl them (creep fingers up from lap towards chin)
Right up to your chin-chin-chin (tap fingers on chin)
Open up your little mouth (open mouth wide)

BUT DO NOT LET THEM IN! (say quickly and hide hands behind back).

Singing is a great way to share words and rhythms with your baby.  While you don’t need a music CD to do this, we do share some songs from CDs in our storytimes.
