For our eStorytime today we visited the market and did some shopping!

Apps We Shared

With our first book, A Day in the Market story by May Tobias-Papa, illustrated by Isabel Roxas from Adarna house (iOS: $2.99; Android Free) we took a trip around the world to the Philippines. With the young narrator and her nanay we visit a market, and then sorted the food and cooked something delicious.  This is a wonderful, multicultural story.

Next, we created our own store with Toca Store by Toca Boca (iOS; $2.99).  The children helped decide what the store should carry, and then I got to play customer and purchase goods.  This is a fun app that is great to introduce your child to money, spending, and counting.   (Parents especially loved the magic purse at the store.  Don’t have enough money to buy what you want?  The magic purse just creates more money!)

In one of my favorite nursery rhymes, a little piggy visits a market.  So we shared This Little Piggy on Nursery Rhymes with Storytime (iOS: FREE).  This is a beautifully illustrated app that has some of the best-known rhymes.

We finished up with a trip to the grocery store with Leo and his dad in Dino-Store by Roger Sedarat, illustrated by Trade Loeffler, from Bluemarker.  But when Leo picks out the large eggs to take home, he and his father are surprised to find they end up with dinosaurs instead of breakfast!

Movements

Try these fun rhymes at home with your child!

Five little cookies in the bakery shop  (hold up five fingers)
Five little cookies with sugar on top (“sprinkle” sugar over fingers with other hand)
Along came a man with a penny in his hand (make fist with other hand)
Click, clock, click, clock, click, clock, click, clock (“walk” fist to five fingers)
He took one cookie and away he ran. (fold down finger and hide fist behind back)

Four little cookies in the bakery shop…..
Three little cookies in the bakery shop…
Two Little cookies in the bakery shop…
One little cookie in the bakery shop…

But we’re not done yet:
No little cookies in the bakery shop.
No little cookies with sugar on top.
Along came a man with a penny in his hand.
Click, clock, click, clock, click, clock, click, clock
He took one look
And away he ran

Book We Shared

A nursery rhyme goes awry in To Market To Market by Anne Miranda, illustrated by Janet Stevens.  A woman keeps visiting the market for animals, but they never stay put.  How will she ever be able to eat lunch?
