Apples seem to cause all sorts of problems in today’s stories.  How could that be?  Well let’s start with Ragnhild Scamell’s picture book, OUCH!  Imagine you’re a hedgehog – you create the perfect nest underneath an apple tree, you step outside for a moment and PLOP, an apple falls right onto your back and stays stuck in your pointy quills.  Now you’re TOO BIG to get into your perfect nest!  A humorous romp as hedgehog attempts to get rid of some excess baggage!

OUCH!

 new house for mouse

In A New House for Mouse by Petr Horacek, a  little mouse finds a delicious, red apple, but it doesn’t fit in his house.  Off he goes, seeking a bigger house to accommodate both his apple and him.  He doesn’t meet with much luck as mole, rabbit and badger turn him down…bear does offer to share his home but mouse feels a bit threatened by that offer.  Of course along the way mouse gets hungry and takes little bites of his juicy apple.  There’s a nice twist at the end of the story as mouse comes full circle and finds the perfect house.

 Pepo and Lolo

In Pepo and Lolo and the Red Apple, Pepo and Lolo are hungry and they spy a beautiful red apple high, high up in an apple tree.  Neither of them can reach the apple, but they figure out a way to solve that problem.  Bright, bold, simple and satisfying-much like a juicy, red apple!  Ana Martin Larranga does a wonderful job with this story – even the older children loved it!

Flannel Board: “Apple Roll”
Five little apples in the bowl
One fell out and started to roll
It bumped the table and hit my feet
How many apples left to eat?
