Since this was the last storytime of the Fall session, it seemed only fitting to transition into winter with stories about Snow!
Books We Shared
To begin infant storytime we read Oh! by Kevin Henkes. This is a look at all the various ways animals can play in the snow. The pictures by Laura Dronzek are just beautiful and convey the soft and gentle atmosphere of a snow-covered word. Next, we read the story of Sleepy Bear by Lydia Dabcovich. When the leaves change color, and the temperature drops, and it starts to snow, bear gets sleepy. He find a cozy cave. But nothing can make him forget the sound of bees — and what type of food they bring!
Mittens usually come in pairs, but we started toddler storytime with a look at all the fun you can have with One Mitten. Next we met mice Pip & Squeak who forgot to bring the cheese along to give to Gus as a birthday present. What will they find instead? And will Gus like it?
Flannelboard Story
In Infant storytime, we built a snowman together.
First the body
And then the head.
A stovepipe hat
and a scarf of red.
Pebbles for eyes
And a carrot nose
Twigs for arms,
placed just so.
And during toddler storytime, we counting down as some snowmen melted:
Five Little Snowpals
(from Felt Board Fingerplays by Liz & Dick Wilmes, art by Janet McDonnell)
Five little snowpals standing in a row.
Each has a hat and big red bow.
Out came the sun and it shone all day.
Until one little snowpal melted away.
Repeat with 4…3…2..1 snowpals
Nursery Rhyme
(Patterns taken from The Flannel Board Storytelling Book by Judy Sierra)
Baa Baa black sheep, Have you any wool?
Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Three bags full.
One for the master,
And one for the dame.
One for the little boy who lives down the lane.
Baa Baa black sheep, Have you any wool?
Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Three bags full.
Film We Watched
“Snow” from Peppa Pig: Muddy Puddles and Other Stories
It’s cold when it snows. So everyone must remember to wear their hats, scarves and gloves — even snowpeople!
