Open Mic Poetry Night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was an exciting night filled with poems, art, music, and performances.<\/p>\n<p>In celebration of National Poetry Month, we held several poetry nights for middle school students and teens.<\/p>\n<p>Students in grades 6-8 from <a href=\"http:\/\/afterschool-programs.pusd.schoolfusion.us\/modules\/groups\/integrated_home.phtml?sessionid=&amp;gid=942979&amp;sessionid=c626aa46aa698b622573ed7c036a5b61\" target=\"_blank\">PUSD LEARNS\u00a0after school program <\/a>share their own self-written poems on stage. \u00a0As part of a writing class called &#8220;The Spoken Word,&#8221; students worked on writing original poetry. \u00a0Some incorporated dance and movement, while others coordinated group performances.<\/p>\n<p>Family and friends enjoyed the pleasure of watching their young poets take the stage&#8211;some for the very first time. \u00a0Reading poems aloud increases listening, language, cognitive, and emotional development. \u00a0It also boosts confidence and freedom of expression.<\/p>\n<p>The event was held in the DRW Auditorium on April 17, 2014.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-583 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div
