Rebel of The Sands<\/span><\/span><\/em>, a young adult’s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>fantasy novel\u00a0<\/span><\/span>by Alwyn Hamilton, was read by the YA Book Club this month.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0The book<\/span><\/span>, though quite complex and hard to follow at points, is one of few\u00a0<\/span><\/span>fantasy books that take place in the Middle East.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Amani has to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>pretend to be a boy to succeed and follow her passions in the town of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Dustwalk<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>which tells us a lot about the time and place this story is taking place in. The not-so-underlying sexism Amani faces in her day to day life adds the power of unexpected female voices in a genre that has typically only given power to male characters and awarded them the title of lead protagonist.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The novel holds the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>overarching<\/span><\/span>\u00a0themes of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>power, magic, romance and politics.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>It<\/span><\/span>\u00a0was\u00a0<\/span><\/span>agreed that politics played one of the biggest roles in the novel alongside magic,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in fact<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the story is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>structured<\/span><\/span>\u00a0so that it is hard to tell where the two themes don’t overlap.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Magic and politics give power to both the antagonists and protagonists of this novel.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>This novel is appealing to<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>most young adults interested in the fantasy genre because of the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0fantastic creatures the story features such as d<\/span><\/span>jinn, more commonly\u00a0<\/span><\/span>referred<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to as genies. Everyone in YA Book Club also had an opinion, overall\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a very positive and enthusiastic one, about the relationship between the main characters Amani and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Jin<\/span><\/span>. Their relationship holds a lot of phases starting as\u00a0<\/span><\/span>accomplices and developing over stages into\u00a0<\/span><\/span>acquaintances<\/span><\/span>, friends and eventually what we\u00a0<\/span><\/span>interp<\/span><\/span>reted<\/span><\/span>\u00a0as a romantic one as well. This book goes above and beyond its label as\u00a0a fantasy novel. In this well-written saga, the topics of sexism, culture, love, politics and self-worth are touched as well giving the reader much more than they signed up for.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>T<\/span><\/span>he final rating was a 4.2 out of 5. For those who enjoyed this book we recommend the following: The\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/span>Clockwork Angel, The Hunger Games<\/a>, A Thousand Splendid Suns<\/a>, Lord of the Rings<\/a>, Lord of the Flies<\/a>, Daughter of Smoke & Bones<\/a>, and Shadow & Bone<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
