in 3D &#8212; Experimenting with 3D printing pens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly 50 teens experimented with the <a href=\"http:\/\/the3doodler.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">3Doodler <\/a>3D printing pens during our &#8220;Draw in 3D&#8221; workshop. \u00a0The pens extrude heated plastic filament that cools almost instantly into a solid, stable structure. \u00a0This makes it possible to draw up into the air or assemble several pieces together to create\u00a0a three-dimensional object.<\/p>\n<p>The participants\u00a0started with drawing something simple, like their name or a cube. \u00a0Once they\u00a0were comfortable enough, they started spinning all sorts of creative objects. \u00a0Some used stencils provided by\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/the3doodler.com\/create\/\" target=\"_blank\">3Doodler website<\/a>; some imagined up their own projects; some collaborated with others.<\/p>\n<p>A few tips on using these pens:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you want to make something curvy (like a cylindrical candle holder), make sure you tape your stencil on something curvy. \u00a0The plastic cools instantly, so if the image is drawn flat with the intention of bending the design later, it may not work as well as you think. \u00a0One teen used the shape of a marker to make rings (see photos below).<\/li>\n<li>In our experience, the black ABS plastic doesn&#8217;t heat up as well as the others.<\/li>\n<li>Some projects may require a partner for ease of assembly (see Eiffel Tower project or hipster glasses photos).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The workshops were 90 minutes long, but some teens could have easily continued for several hours. \u00a0These projects stimulate imagination,\u00a0arts, and engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a selection of their creations:<\/p>\n<p><a
