Teens who entered our Summer Reading Club drawings were asked to write a few words about each book they read. Here are a few samples that might guide you to a new book to read:

What character in the book would you like to be and why?

Ava M., book Ella Fitzgerald by Tanya Lee Stone
Ella, because she has so much spirit and influence and she’s a great singer.
Angel G., graphic novel The Watchmen by Alan Moore
I wouldn’t really like to be anyone because they’re all, well, to an extent crazy, you have to be in order to dress up in a mask and fight crime, especially after there’s a law prohibiting those actions. But if I really had to choose it’d be Rorshach because he’s relentless and super-smart. Or Bernie, the boy not the old man, because it doesn’t look like he’s got anything else to do but sit and read comics.
Isaac L., book The Ascension: A Super Human Clash by Michael Carroll
Krodin. He’s immortal and invincible. Although he is stuck on Mars right now…

What was your favorite part of the book?

Ashley P., book The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
When Dimmesdale admits to the public that he has committed a sin and that Hester and Pearl are his family.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Christine A., book Life With Father by Clarence Day
Yes, because the very entertaining story will keep you laughing throughout!
Isaac A., book Sunrise Over Fallujah by Walter Dean Myers
Yes, many boys do not get the horror of war; they only think of the glory. Sunrise Over Fallujah shows how horrible war can be.
Jean L., book The Shakespeare Stealer by Gary Blackwood
Yes, because it is so exciting and you never know what’s going to happen at the end of the story.
John Y., book Captain Awesome Takes a Dive by Stan Kirby
Yes I would because it’s an interesting story and the more you read it you’re going to like it.
Marissa S., book Popped Culture: A Social History of Popcorn in America by Andrew Smith
Yes, I would recommend this book to a friend because it was very interesting and showed many neat things about popcorn.
Aaron Y., book The Maze Runner by James Dashner
Yes. Teens would really enjoy this book, so full of mystery, suspense and horror.
Attila H., book Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler
Yes, but definitely not to someone who is not old enough to handle it, because it has lots of morbid scenes and events.
Adrian M., book The Adventure of a South Pole Pig by Chris Kurtz
Yes, if you like pigs, and believe in dreams.
Callie G., book Kisses from Katie by Katie Davis
Yes, it is a great book and it changes your life.

Almost 200 local teens were in our Summer Reading Club this year, and many of them won cool prizes, including books, bowling passes, t-shirts, and our grand prize winner won a Nook Color e-reader. Maybe we’ll see you in the club next summer.
