Our 6th storytime of the summer session was all about Food!\u00a0\u00a0We also had a visit from Max the Mouse and\u00a0he ate all of our strawberries!!\u00a0 I guess mice really do love to eat!\u00a0 Here\u00a0are\u00a0the stories,\u00a0songs, rhymes, flannel boards, activities and video we explored about our topic.<\/p>\n

Books We Shared<\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u00a0 \"\"<\/a>\u00a0 \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In The Little Mouse, The Red, Ripe Strawberry and The Big Hungry Bear<\/span> <\/a>by Don and Audrey Wood, we see a little mouse picking a beautiful, red, ripe strawberry.\u00a0 But he gets a warning!\u00a0 There is also a hungry bear lurking about and he LOVES strawberries too (he can even smell them from miles away).\u00a0 “Stomp, stomp, stomp” – the bear will tromp through the forest to take that strawberry\u00a0away\u00a0from that little\u00a0mouse.\u00a0 But there is a way out!\u00a0 Little\u00a0mouse can cut the strawberry in two and share it with the narrator.\u00a0 That\u00a0would be one red, ripe\u00a0strawberry the bear won’t get to eat!<\/p>\n

Our second book was\u00a0Lunch<\/a> by Denise Fleming.\u00a0 I used flannel board pieces to accompany the story and make it come alive for the children.\u00a0\u00a0 (See under\u00a0“Flannel Boards We\u00a0Shared”).<\/p>\n

“Lunch” <\/span>is all about a mouse who loves to EAT!\u00a0 He wakes up soooo\u00a0hungry that he eats through a turnip, some carrots, an ear of corn, some green peas, berries, grapes, apples and even a big slice of watermelon.\u00a0 After all that eating, he goes back to bed\u2026UNTIL DINNERTIME!\u00a0 This is a great book to introduce\u00a0your child\u00a0to different types of food.\u00a0 It is beautifully illustrated but the colors are a bit subdued.\u00a0 That is why the flannel pieces work so well as a supplement to the story.\u00a0 Toddlers can see the larger, more colorful pieces\u00a0which keeps them\u00a0engaged.<\/p>\n

We added a third story to our\u00a0bag of tricks!\u00a0 I always try and stretch things a bit as we get beyond the halfway point of our session.\u00a0 Today is Monday<\/span> <\/a>by Eric Carle is a great book to learn about food\u00a0and the days of the week.\u00a0 This is a picture book that you can read or “sing” aloud.\u00a0 I chose to sing the words to keep the\u00a0toddlers engaged and to add impact to the\u00a0cumulative effect of the story.\u00a0 We start with Monday…”Today is Monday, today is Monday…Monday String Beans, all you hungry children, come and eat it up”.\u00a0 Then we add Tuesday, “Today is Tuesday, today is Tuesday, Tuesday Spaghetti, Monday String Beans, all you hungry children, come and eat it up” – we go through all of the days of the week and conclude with ice cream on Sunday!\u00a0 The final photograph shows children from all walks of life sitting together to eat.<\/p>\n
