Sensory Storytime is a fun, interactive, educational\u00a0storytime designed for preschool age children with autism and\/or sensory challenges.\u00a0 It involves books, songs, movement and\u00a0therapeutic play\u00a0that incorporate the five senses.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

THEME:\u00a0 RAIN<\/h5>\n

Stories<\/h4>\n

The books chosen for Sensory Storytime are the same books we would choose for a toddler or preschool storytime.\u00a0 They need to be colorful with simple text and a well-defined concept or a linear, easy-to-follow story.\u00a0 If we have a group of children who have difficulty sitting through even a few pages, we can paraphrase the text or use props such as handheld puppets to\u00a0encourage engagement.<\/p>\n

Listed below are two books that were used for the third\u00a0storytime of our winter session.\u00a0 Click onto the images or the titles\u00a0to find them in our library catalog.<\/p>\n

In Valeri Gorbachev\u2019s,\u00a0\u00a0One Rainy Day<\/span><\/a>, \u00a0A pig and a whole group of animals try to escape the rain by crowding under ONE tree. \u00a0It gets a little tight when the hippo and elephant join in! \u00a0A humorous book that builds anticipation and helps with animal identification and counting.<\/p>\n

Big Storm<\/span><\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Nancy Tafuri\u00a0is similar in concept to One Rainy Day<\/span> <\/a>with 10 different animals trying to find shelter in a hill hollow. \u00a0Even with all 10 safe and sound, there is a rumble…what is that? \u00a0Thunder? \u00a0But never fear, the book ends with a rainbow after the \u00a0storm. As the title suggests, it is \u00a0A Very Soggy Counting Book<\/em>.<\/p>\n
