We had some great guest\u00a0scorekeepers at our Lucha Libros battle last night. \u00a0One of them was our new Library Director, Michelle Perera! \u00a0She stopped by after work to check out the event and when she saw we were short on people, she jumped in and lent a hand! \u00a0A parent also jumped in as a scorekeeper to help us keep things moving quickly. \u00a0The turnout was pretty good considering that it was still PUSD’s Winter Break. \u00a0We had a total of approximately 93 people. \u00a037 luchadores came to participate in answering questions about the book Winter of the Ice Wizard<\/em><\/a>\u00a0\/ El invierno del hechicero del hielo<\/em> <\/a>by Mary Pope Osborne. \u00a0The last half of the questions were answered correctly almost unanimously! \u00a0I think these kids are getting too smart for me.<\/p>\n

Our most popular prize last night: This weird Siamese twin rubber ducky! \u00a0The kids were crazy about\u00a0this prize, trying to get the last few we had in our\u00a0Two-Ticket Treasure Chest.<\/p>\n

As always my personal favorite part of the program is the open-ended questions\u00a0at the end. \u00a0I go around the room with a microphone and invite the kids to tell everyone what they think in response to the themes of the book. \u00a0In this month’s\u00a0book, there is this “Frost Giant” character whom Jack and Annie are terrified of, and he\u00a0turns out to be quite different from what they expected. \u00a0We had a lively discussion about why, as Morgan explains to\u00a0Jack and Annie, people sometimes make the world seem\u00a0scarier than it really is. \u00a0Kids brought up reasons like:<\/p>\n
