Luckily no one yawned during our Infant and Toddler Storytimes today.\u00a0\u00a0I understand that our theme\u00a0could make a person very, very sleepy<\/em>.\u00a0 Check out some of the stories, activities and songs we explored.<\/p>\n

\n

Stories<\/h4>\n

\"shhh-this-book-is-sleeping\"\u00a0 \"yawn\"\"book-of-sleep\"\"sleepyheads\"<\/p>\n

During our infant storytime, we read\u00a0Sleepyheads<\/a><\/span> by Sandra J. Howatt and Yawn<\/span> <\/span><\/a>by Nick Sharratt.\u00a0\u00a0 In Sleepyheads<\/a><\/span> we are introduced to all kinds of\u00a0“animal”\u00a0sleepyheads that curl\u00a0up in different places –\u00a0a bear who nestles in a cave, a rabbit\u00a0snoozing in the weeds, a piglet burrowed in the hay…and many others.\u00a0 Finally we see a house and decide to “peek inside” to see if we can find where all the wee ones lay their sleepy heads.\u00a0 We find a puppy and kitty near the fireplace and a teddy bear, a pillow and a bed.\u00a0 But where is the sleepyhead that belongs here?\u00a0 In Mama’s arms of course!\u00a0 The visuals are strong, yet slightly muted to fit the theme and the ending is just so sweet.\u00a0 A great\u00a0one for bedtime.\u00a0\u00a0Yawn <\/u><\/span><\/a> <\/u>is\u00a0the opposite in feel.\u00a0 It is a board book that takes us through quite a bit of yawning.\u00a0 (They do say it’s contagious!)\u00a0 It begins with Sean who gives a yawn\u00a0to cat who gives a yawn to bird who gives a yawn to fish…well I think you get the picture.\u00a0 The yawn\u00a0ends up with Nellie (the elephant) who says it’s time to put some jammies on and go to bed!\u00a0 A really fun book with a big cutout mouth for Sean and each animal that follows.<\/p>\n

The toddlers were able to handle three books today so we read Sleepyheads along with two others:\u00a0 Shhh! this Book\u00a0is Sleeping <\/span><\/a>by\u00a0\u00a0Cedric Ramadier and A Book of Sleep<\/span><\/span> <\/a>by Il Sung Na.\u00a0 A Book of Sleep<\/span> <\/span><\/a>illustrates how different animals curl up.\u00a0 Koalas sleep in peace and quiet, \u00a0while elephants make lots of noise, giraffes stay standing and a\u00a0whale\u00a0sleeps on the move.\u00a0 Na’s\u00a0illustrations are subtle yet\u00a0beautiful, clear and rich.\u00a0 The book concludes with the morning sunrise and\u00a0everyone waking up EXCEPT\u00a0for\u00a0nocturnal owl who is just beginning to nod off.\u00a0\u00a0 Ramadier’s book, Shhh! this Book\u00a0is Sleeping<\/span> <\/a>is a fabulous board book that engages\u00a0toddlers in unexpected ways.\u00a0 During storytime the kiddos\u00a0were convinced that the book we were\u00a0reading was actually sleepy<\/em>.\u00a0 So what do the parents of toddlers do when it’s bedtime?\u00a0 They ask lots of question like, “Did you brush your teeth?”\u00a0and “Did you go pee-pee?”\u00a0 There is also the bedtime story,\u00a0the offering of a\u00a0“blankie” and\u00a0a\u00a0hug and kiss goodnight.\u00a0 We enacted all\u00a0of those steps until we finally turned out the lights (I turned off the storyhour room lights, just to make sure we wouldn’t wake our book).\u00a0 The children were mesmerized by this simple yet familiar tale about bedtime rituals.<\/p>\n
