First we read excerpts from a couple great stories involving codes: <a href=\"http:\/\/pgpl-mt.iii.com\/iii\/encore_pasadena\/record\/C__Rb1501501__Sruby%20redfort__P0%2C3__Orightresult__U__X6?lang=eng&amp;suite=pasadena\" target=\"_blank\">Ruby Redfort Take Your Last Breath<\/a> by Lauren Child, and <a href=\"http:\/\/pgpl-mt.iii.com\/iii\/encore_pasadena\/record\/C__Rb1516037__Sspotted%20dog%20last%20seen__Orightresult__U__X6?lang=eng&amp;suite=pasadena\" target=\"_blank\">The Spotted Dog Last Seen<\/a> by Jessica Scott. \u00a0Ruby Redfort is a code decryption genius, a kid hired by a super spy agency at the center of a series of middle grade spy novels. \u00a0<em>The Spotted Dog Last Seen<\/em> is a book with a premise somewhat similar to <em>Holes<\/em> by Louis Sachar, in which kids are doing manual labor for an unknown purpose. \u00a0The graveyard and the people who run it are a mystery to the kids.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pgpl-mt.iii.com\/iii\/encore_pasadena\/record\/C__Rb1501501__Sruby%20redfort__P0%2C3__Orightresult__U__X6?lang=eng&amp;suite=pasadena\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/d.gr-assets.com\/books\/1351213347l\/15841901.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"318\" height=\"438\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pgpl-mt.iii.com\/iii\/encore_pasadena\/record\/C__Rb1516037__Sspotted%20dog%20last%20seen__Orightresult__U__X6?lang=eng&amp;suite=pasadena\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/jessicascottkerrin.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/07\/9781554983872.jpg?w=584&amp;h=862\" alt=\"\" width=\"317\" height=\"468\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had these books set out on a cart along with other books like <a href=\"http:\/\/pgpl-mt.iii.com\/iii\/encore_pasadena\/record\/C__Rb1380514__Sspyology__Orightresult__U__X6?lang=eng&amp;suite=pasadena\" target=\"_blank\">Spyology: The Complete Book of Spycraft<\/a> by Spencer Blake, <a href=\"http:\/\/pgpl-mt.iii.com\/iii\/encore_pasadena\/record\/C__Rb1280960__Stop%20secret__P0%2C22__Orightresult__U__X6?lang=eng&amp;suite=pasadena\" target=\"_blank\">Top Secret: A Handbook of Codes, Ciphers and Secret Writing<\/a> by Paul Janeczko, and <a href=\"http:\/\/pgpl-mt.iii.com\/iii\/encore_pasadena\/record\/C__Rb1015764__Sjournal%20of%20beatrix__P0%2C1__Orightresult__U__X6?lang=eng&amp;suite=pasadena\" target=\"_blank\">The Journal of Beatrix Potter<\/a>. I asked kids which one of these books didn&#8217;t belong; they said the Beatrix Potter one, of course.<\/p>\n<p>But it was a trick question \ud83d\ude09 I showed them that Beatrix Potter created her own code for writing her journal in, and gave them a copy of the code key, copied from the book. Then I had them decrypt some secret messages written in Beatrix Potter&#8217;s code. The secret messages were all spy-themed, and kids were asked to write a story about what the message means, what the spy&#8217;s mission is, and what the spy&#8217;s next steps will be.<\/p>\n<p><img allowed the kids to choose from a set of different codes, including Egyptian hieroglyphics, the Freemason code, the Star Wars code, and the Morse code. They had to write an encrypted message and then trade with another child and decrypt each other&#8217;s messages. Most of the kids chose to write joke starter lines, which was the perfect length for this exercise.
