THERE’S A MONSTER<\/strong> IN THE LIBRARY but we’re NOT<\/strong> AFRAID!<\/p>\n

We had some monstrous fun during our\u00a0Toddler Storytime.<\/p>\n

Below are some of the stories and activities we explored:<\/p>\n

OPENING SONGS:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Go Away, Big Green Monster<\/strong> by Ed Emberley<\/em>
\n\"Go<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em>We start with “two big yellow eyes, a long, bluish-greenish nose…” and continue to add features until we have one big scary monster!<\/p>\n

Not to worry,\u00a0when he gets out of hand, we just begin taking away his features one by one…<\/p>\n

This book, illustrated by Caldeocott Award-winning illustrator, Ed Emberley, uses<\/p>\n

the diecut technique to construct AND deconstruct the green monster in the story.<\/p>\n

The toddlers were mesmerized\u00a0by the colors, the shapes & the\u00a0suspense.<\/p>\n

MOVEMENT SONG:\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

That’s Not My Monster<\/strong>…by Fiona Watt<\/em>
\n\"thats-not-my-monster\"<\/a><\/p>\n

This is a great board\u00a0book for helping\u00a0toddlers develop sensory and language awareness.<\/p>\n

Of\u00a0course at the end we discover the final monster with fluffy ears is our monster<\/em> \u2013 who can resist<\/p>\n

fluffy ears on a monster anyway?\u00a0 The children loved this book and sat quietly as I turned each page.<\/p>\n

FLANNEL BOARD STORY<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Five Monsters in the Bed<\/em><\/p>\n

There were 5 (monsters) in the bed…<\/p>\n

There were five in the bed and the little monster said,<\/p>\n

“Move over, move over…”<\/p>\n

So they all moved over and one fell out!<\/p>\n

OUCH – ROAR!<\/p>\n

Repeat until there is only one monster left…then sing…<\/p>\n

There was one in the bed and this monster said,<\/p>\n

“I’m lonely, I’m lonely.”<\/p>\n

So he called all his friends and they all came back!<\/p>\n

1, 2, 3, 4 5!!!<\/p>\n

There were five in the bed and they all just said,<\/p>\n

“Night night now…night night now.”<\/p>\n

Then they all rolled over and they turned out the light…(click)<\/p>\n

Shhhhhh…they’re sleeping.
\n\"Flannel<\/a><\/p>\n

FLANNEL MONSTER PUPPET<\/strong><\/em>\"monster\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0We had fun with our flannel monster puppet.<\/p>\n

The eyes, ears, mouth, nose and hair are all re-moveable, making this a great prop for re-telling Ed Emberley\u2019s story to toddlers.<\/p>\n

We start with just the monster\u2019s green face..then begin adding parts one at a time:<\/p>\n

Big Green Monster has a big, scary green face,<\/p>\n

Two big yellow eyes, (add eyes)<\/p>\n

a long, bluish-green nose, (add nose)<\/p>\n

Two little squiggly ears, (add ears)<\/p>\n

Scraggly purple hair (add hair)<\/p>\n

and a big, red mouth with sharp white teeth\u2026 (add mouth)<\/p>\n

BUT<\/p>\n

\"Go<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0You\u2019re just a PUPPET!<\/p>\n

And you don\u2019t scare us!!!!\u00a0 So\u2026<\/p>\n

GO AWAY, scraggly purple hair,\u00a0 (remove hair)<\/p>\n

GO AWAY, two little squiggly ears,\u00a0 (remove ears)<\/p>\n

GO AWAY, long bluish-green nose,\u00a0 (remove nose)<\/p>\n

GO AWAY big yellow eyes, (remove eyes)<\/p>\n

GO AWAY big, red mouth with those sharp white teeth\u00a0 (remove mouth)<\/p>\n

GO AWAY, big scary green face,\u00a0 (turn hand mitt around to show black side)<\/p>\n

AND DON\u2019T COME BACK<\/p>\n

Until I say so.<\/p>\n
