\nLast week’s Infant Storytime, our last of the Winter Session, was all about the forest. We put together a flannelboard picture out of shapes, and I based it on the book Orange, Triangle, Fox<\/em><\/a> by Sarah Jones:\n<\/p>\n

\nWe played I Spy and talked about forest animals. Then we read Mama’s Little Bears<\/em><\/a> by Nancy Tafuri. The large illustrations show bears discovering all the animals that share their forest home.\n<\/p>\n

\nWe sang the song “Way Up High in the Apple Tree”:\n<\/p>\n

Way up high in the apple tree
\nTwo little apples smiled at me
\nI shook that tree as hard as I could (tickle baby)
\nMm, mm, mm those apples were good! (tickle baby’s tummy)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nAfter that we did something new: I created a sheet with rhyme lyrics, and an image of three eggs in a nest. Then I cut out slits around the eggs so that the parent holding it could poke their fingers through as the little birds hatch! Here is a PDF<\/a> you can reproduce. And here are the lyrics:\n<\/p>\n

\nHere\u2019s an egg in a nest in a tree.
\nWhat\u2019s inside? What can it be?
\nPeck, peck, peck,
\nPeep, peep, peep.
\nOut hatched a little bird, (poke finger through)
\nCute as can be! (wiggle finger)<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s an egg in a nest in a tree.
\nWhat\u2019s inside? What can it be?
\nPeck, peck, peck,
\nPeep, peep, peep.
\nOut came a second bird (poke finger through)

\nOut hatched another bird, (poke finger through)

\nWe sang “A Smooth Road to London Town,” and bounced our babies to the rhythm:\n<\/p>\n

A smooth road to London Town,
\n A smooth road to London Town,
\nThe road goes up and the road goes down,
\n A smooth road to London Town.<\/p>\n

But by and by we came to a wood,
\n And there the roads are not so good,
\n A bumpy road, a bumpy road,
\n A bumpy road to London town.<\/p>\n

A smooth road to London Town,
\n A smooth road to London Town,
\nThe road goes up and the road goes down,
\n A smooth road to London Town.<\/p>\n

But by and by we came to a dell,
\n And there the roads are not so swell,
\n A rough road, a rough road,

\nThen we read another book, Sally In The Forest<\/em><\/a> by Stephen Huneck. It’s a funny book, also about exploring animals in the woods.\n<\/p>\n

\nWe did another tickle–“Slowly, slowly”:\n<\/p>\n

Slowly, slowly, very slowly creeps the garden snail. (walk fingers up arm)
\nSlowly, slowly, very slowly up the wooden rail.
\nQuickly, quickly, very quickly runs the little mouse. (run fingers around child’s belly)
\nQuickly, quickly, very quickly round about the house. (slip fingers under child’s arm and tickle) <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nThen we sang “Bunny, white bunny”:\n<\/p>\n

Bunny, white bunny (place pointer fingers beside head)
\nWith ears so tall,
\nAnd your two pink eyes,
\nAnd a mouth so small, (make O with mouth)
\nWiggle goes one ear, (wiggle one finger)
\nWiggle goes the other, (wiggle other finger)
\nHop, hop, hop, hop home
\nTo your mother!
