\nYesterday we read books, sang songs and did fingerplays about animals that live in the swamp! First, we made a picture with shapes–circles, half-circles, triangles, rectangles, and a trapezoid and a pentagon–showing some of the animals that live in a swamp or wetland. I lost my photo for the whole scene but here’s the flamingo:\n<\/p>\n

\nWe did a little rhyme about the flamingo:\n<\/p>\n

One flamingo
\nOne pink flamingo the finest in the zoo,
\nPeople come from miles around to see what he can do.
\nHe flaps his wings
\nHe turns around
\nHe stands with 1 leg off the ground<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nThen we read a book about a crocodile who loves watermelon. It’s called The Watermelon Seed<\/em><\/a> by Greg Pizzoli.\n<\/p>\n

\nAfter that we sang a song to the tune of “If You’re Happy and You Know It”:\n<\/p>\n

If you want to be a frog, hop up high,
\nIf you want to be a frog, hop up high,
\nIf you want to be a frog, be a happy, hoppy frog,
\nIf you want to be a frog, hop up high!<\/p>\n

If you want to be a gator, snap your jaws,
\nIf you want to be a gator, snap your jaws,
\nIf you want to be a gator, be a scary hungry gator,
\nIf you want to be a gator, snap your jaws!<\/p>\n

If you want to be a flamingo, flap your wings,
\nIf you want to be a flamingo, flap your wings,
\nIf you want to be a flamingo, be a beautiful flamingo,
\nIf you want to be a flamingo, flap your wings!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nWe sang about Five Little Monkeys Teasing Mr. Crocodile:\n<\/p>\n

\nThen we sang a song called “Alligator, alligator”:\n<\/p>\n

Alligator, alligator, long and green (hold out arm: 4 fingers, thumb below)
\nAlligator, alligator, teeth so mean (open and close fingers and thumb)
\nSnapping at a fly, snapping at a bee, (snap with fingers and thumb)
\nSnapping at a frog, and snapping at me!
\nHe caught the fly, he caught the bee, (snap with fingers and thumb)
\nHe caught the frog, but he didn’t catch me!<\/p>\n

\nWe bounced to “A Smooth Road to London Town,” and read another book, a classic called For Pete’s Sake<\/em><\/a> by Ellen Stoll Walsh. It’s about a little baby gator who wants to be a flamingo and notices how different he is from other flamingos:\n<\/p>\n

\nWe sang the song “Five Little Speckled Frogs,” and used our felt pieces and our CD:\n<\/p>\n

\nWe sang the song “Little Baby Gator” with our gator puppet:\n<\/p>\n

Little baby gator swimming through the swamp (hands together, swim gator-like)
\nEating lots of fish with a CHOMP, CHOMP, CHOMP! (chomp hands open and closed)
\nAlong came a hunter with a great big net, (pretend to raise net)
\nGator went SPLASH! (mist children with water bottle)(splash loudly)
\nAnd the hunter got wet! (shake hands and self)
