In the spirit of One City, One Story<\/em>, the Pasadena Public Library and\u00a0Vroman\u2019s Bookstore hosted\u00a0programs centered around the\u00a0Young\u00a0Readers League (YRL) selection, El Deafo<\/strong><\/em> by Cece Bell.\u00a0YRL\u00a0is\u00a0designed as a community-wide reading\u00a0celebration by championing and geeking\u00a0out over a single book.<\/p>\n

El Deafo\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>is\u00a0a hilarious\u00a0and charming graphic novel memoir\u00a0about a young hearing impaired girl and\u00a0her experiences growing up. It\u2019s often\u00a0described as a mashup of Raina Telgemeier\u2019s\u00a0Smile<\/em> and R.J. Palacio\u2019s Wonder<\/em>.<\/p>\n

We offered several tie-in programs here at the library:\u00a0El Deafo<\/em> trivia competition\u00a0with superhero cape making in November,\u00a0and a scavenger hunt with clues in\u00a0sign language in December. \u00a0During both events, I met several families who all read the book (from 6 year olds to their parents), and all found it a great topic for discussion.\u00a0It’s a wonderful\u00a0draw for\u00a0middle school kids, younger and older siblings, parents, teachers, anyone!<\/p>\n

Kids Book Club: \u00a0El Deafo Jeopardy and superhero cape craft<\/span><\/h3>\n

In this special edition of the Kids Book Club, we celebrated\u00a0El Deafo<\/em> with a trivia competition (Jeopardy style) and diy superhero capes. The kids wrote their answers on a notebook page, presented their answers, then I announced the answer and awarded each correct answer with a raffle ticket. The participant with the most answers correct won a hardcover copy of El Deafo; excluding the top participant (since she already won a book), a second book was raffled to the remaining participants–their chances being a result of how many tickets they earned during the game. Consequently, the second highest ticket-earning participant won the raffle–a six year old!<\/p>\n

After the game, everyone designed their own red cape using fabric and Crayola fabric markers. \u00a0This was a no-sew method, using hole punchers and string to cinch the capes together. \u00a0The kids were also challenged to devise\u00a0their own superhero name by flipping\u00a0what would normally be considered their\u00a0flaw into their superpower–like our hero herself.<\/p>\n
