Bugs! Bugs! Bugs!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

We read stories about bugs in Tuesday’s Infant Toddler Storytimes.\u00a0 Well some of the adults (one in particular) weren’t\u00a0too happy about this, but when I assured them\u00a0I didn’t have any REAL bugs in my storytime arsenal (just some stories and flannels ABOUT bugs)\u00a0they settled down.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 We shared some great pop-up bugs in Bedtime Bugs,<\/strong> beautiful illustrations of all kinds of bugs in Bugs! Bugs! Bugs<\/strong>! AND we identified some\u00a0bugs that hop, flap, creep and crawl in I Like Bugs<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

So,\u00a0a little\u00a0bug lesson – a bug is a type of insect.\u00a0 Sometimes we use the terms interchangeably but we really shouldn’t.\u00a0\u00a0Of course, I didn’t worry about this too much\u00a0with the infants and toddlers.\u00a0 Another\u00a0interesting tidbit you may\/may not be aware of:\u00a0\u00a0 Spiders aren’t insects!\u00a0 Do you know some of the differences?\u00a0 I’ve listed them below – just for fun!\u00a0 If your toddler seems intrigued by bugs,\u00a0you might want to point out the following:<\/p>\n

Legs:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Insects: 6<\/p>\n

Spiders: 8<\/p>\n

Meals:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Insects: a wide variety \u2014 some even eat plastic, paper, and lint<\/p>\n

Spiders: mostly insects, but some even eat small frogs or mice<\/p>\n

Antennae (an-TEH-nee)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Insects:\u00a0 yes \u2014 that’s how they smell<\/p>\n

Spiders: no \u2014 they sense through bristles on their legs<\/p>\n

Wings:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Insects: usually<\/p>\n

Spiders: never<\/p>\n

Body Sections:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Insects: 3: head, thorax, abdomen<\/p>\n

Spiders: 2: cephalothorax (seh-fuh-luh-THOR-ax), abdomen<\/p>\n
