Because they put so much thought, effort and skill into it, it was easy for me to total up their scores and determine clear winners.<\/p>\n<p>We got 24 beautiful entries by children all over Pasadena, and they are ALL on display (in photograph or photocopy form) for lasting enjoyment by library patrons browsing the chapter books in the children\u2019s room.<\/p>\n<p>Of these 24 entries, 6 were selected as winners in our two categories:<\/p>\n<p>6-8 Years Old Category:<br \/>\n1st Place: Quentin Sloan, for &#8220;The Map of My Imagination&#8221;<br \/>\n2nd Place: Nicole Hsueh, for &#8220;Reading Takes ME Everywhere!&#8221;<br \/>\n3rd Place: Clara Park, for &#8220;A New World is a Page Away&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>9-12 Years Old Category:<br \/>\n1st Place: Allison Drake, for &#8220;The Expanding Universe of Books&#8221;<br \/>\n2nd Place: Meridith Southard, for &#8220;Dragon Reader&#8221;<br \/>\n3rd Place: Josie Calva-Despard, for &#8220;Literary Quests&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now let&#8217;s share each piece in turn, and what our judges had to say about it!<\/p>\n<p><strong>6-8 Third Place, Clara Park, &#8220;A New World is a Page Away&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-11274\" src=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2018\/07\/clarapark-300x217.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2018\/07\/clarapark-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2018\/07\/clarapark-1024x741.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2018\/07\/clarapark.jpg 1301w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the 6-8 Years Old Category, our third place winner is Clara Park, for her colored pencil and marker drawing titled \u201cA New World is a Page Away.\u201d Our judges called this picture \u201ccolorful and inviting,\u201d with \u201ccute characters\u201d and \u201ca lot of attention to detail and color contrast.\u201d They also praised the artist for \u201cnice use of space\u201d and \u201cexcellent creativity,\u201d saying: \u201cWe can see where the kitty is traveling to in her mind as she reads.\u201d Congratulations to Clara Park!<\/p>\n<p><strong>6-8 Second Place, Nicole Hsueh, &#8220;Reading Takes ME Everywhere!&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-11278\" src=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2018\/07\/nicole-hsueh-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2018\/07\/nicole-hsueh-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2018\/07\/nicole-hsueh-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our second place winner in this category is Nicole Hsueh, for her pastel, pencil and crayon drawing titled \u201cReading Takes ME Everywhere!\u201d Our judges loved the \u201cbeautiful, careful artwork\u201d of this piece, with its vivid colors and its thoughtful design, dividing the page in half by morning and night. They also loved Nicole\u2019s little creative touches that gave extra depth and expression to her theme, like the way the buildings are books and the magic carpet is books. Wonderful creativity, technical skill and execution. Sloan, for his colored pencil drawing titled \u201cThe Map of My Imagination.\u201d Our judges had a lot of enthusiasm for this picture, noting that it used \u201clots of imagination\u201d and gave them \u201cso much to look at and draw the eye!\u201d They also loved the \u201cattention to detail and the surrealistic feel of the piece,\u201d comparing Quentin\u2019s style to surrealists like Salvador Dali. The figures in this piece are diverse, abstract and animated, and incorporate great examples of real books. \u201cThe artist loves reading, and it shows!\u201d Congratulations Quentin Sloan, our first place winner!<\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s talk about a few of the artworks that our judges also felt had a lot of merit. In most cases these artworks were selected by at least one judge for a fourth or fifth place. They praised her for her \u201cExcellent concept and excellent execution,\u201d her \u201cbold, strong use\u201d of \u201cjewel-like color,\u201d her \u201ccarefully executed,\u201d \u201ccreative and clear\u201d concept, her \u201cgreat drawing and mixed media skills.\u201d They said \u201cthe dreamlike images were entrancing,\u201d because \u201cthe worlds in each bubble are unique.\u201d One judge compared it to some great artists: \u201ca bit of Chagall, mixed with Dali, mixed with Gauguin.\u201d \u201cColor, line, form and composition all blend seamlessly.\u201d Congratulations, Allison Drake, our first place winner!<\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s talk about a few of the artworks that our judges also felt had a lot of merit. But the original winning artworks are also going to be displayed in our Main Hall display case next to Admin. The winners who were able to attend our award ceremony have already received their prizes consisting of a PPL tote bag full of art supplies purchased from Blick and Michaels. The remaining winners who couldn\u2019t attend will be contacted and will be able to pick up their prizes at the Central Library Children\u2019s Room.
