So we have the common saying:\u00a0<span class=\"bold\">like poles repel, unlike poles attract<\/span>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>A magnet creates an invisible area of magnetism all around it called a\u00a0<b>magnetic field<\/b>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>The north pole of a magnet points roughly toward Earth&#8217;s north pole and vice-versa. That&#8217;s because Earth itself contains magnetic materials and behaves like a gigantic magnet.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>If you cut a bar magnet in half, it&#8217;s a bit like cutting an earthworm in half! You get two brand new, smaller magnets, each with its own north and south pole. (This is, of course, a joke. You don&#8217;t get two worms if you cut a worm in half. But you do get two magnets.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>If you run a magnet a few times over an unmagnetized piece of a magnetic material (such as an iron nail), you can convert it into a magnet as well. \/>\n<h5>SOME MORE FUN FACTS!<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff00ff\"><strong>Ferromagnetic metals<\/strong><\/span> are strongly attracted by a magnetic force.<\/p>\n<p>The common <strong><span style=\"color: #ff00ff\">ferromagnetic metals<\/span> <\/strong>include<span style=\"color: #ff00ff\"> iron<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff00ff\">nickel<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff00ff\">cobalt,<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff00ff\">gadolinium<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff00ff\">dysprosium<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff00ff\">alloys such as steel that also contain specific ferromagnetic metals such as iron or nicke<\/span>l.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff00ff\">Ferromagnetic metals<\/span><\/strong> are commonly used to make permanent magnets.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>Budding Scientists at Work<\/h1>\n<p>Harvey is exploring\u00a0magnetization.\u00a0 He noticed that his\u00a0magnet wasn&#8217;t attracted to the aluminum container but when he put a few paper clips in the container&#8230;voila!\u00a0 The paper clips moved with the magnet.\u00a0 (Harvey placed the magnet underneath the aluminum container and moved it around &#8211; the
