One can start a list and argue about the many oxymorons in the English Language\u2026\u00a0 act naturally, exact estimates, pretty ugly, original copies, clearly misunderstood<\/i>, etc.<\/p>\n
Let\u2019s talk more about confusing Library terms, acronyms, and jargons \u2013 Library gobbledygook.<\/p>\n
What was that?\u00a0 OPAC? The item is renewable? \u00a0Do an I.L.L.?\u00a0 Union list, ALA, shelf-check, OCLC? <\/i><\/p>\n
Library staff tends to speak a language peppered with technical terms, acronyms, references to people and institutions; and even ordinary English words which have acquired specialized meanings for the library and the people working in the library.<\/p>\n
\u00a0When the Library had its Staff Development Day last Thursday, the speaker brought up an interesting point: try to use regular words when speaking with your customers.\u00a0 Being able to \u2018talk\u2019 on the same level with library users is an excellent start. Communicate better by avoiding library jargon.<\/p>\n
