The book is about a dog who is reborn again and again, remembering their past experiences and using them again in their next life. The first life is a brutally short one, ending in an early demise, but the next one brings happiness to her owner and saves him. However, after being reborn, the dog begins to question their purpose in life. This book asks the same questions people struggle with, such as why we are here, and why things seem to happen the way they do.
This book was definitely not in my typical reading list. It was quite interesting, however, to see a dog’s point of view on the world. The writing was solid, although it did feel a bit distracting when the dog was not focused. It also was somewhat cliché, in that the main character’s owner ended up marrying his old sweetheart, but it otherwise was not overly boring to read. It did feel a bit slow at times, but the book was just fast paced enough to keep my attention. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would have. 3.5/5 stars.

Find this book in our catalog: A Dog’s Purpose

Catalog Number: FIC CAMERON,W

319 pages

More Recommendations

We All Looked Up — YA book club

Extraordinary Means — teen review

The Night Circus — teen review

review by John Chon, age 14 A Dog’s Purpose by W.
