Below are brief notes from our meeting.<\/p>\n

Pre-meeting assignment<\/strong><\/p>\n

Research the following topic: \u00a0Why are libraries essential to teens?<\/p>\n

Go through this research, and highlight parts that speak directly to you. Think about why you joined TAB in the first place. What were you expecting out of your experience?<\/p>\n

Next, spend another hour and look at the Youth Master Plan, pages 16-23, and see where the library can support these priorities.<\/p>\n

Library services are defined by the surrounding community. For instance, the services we talked about last year in May (when we decided on the Mental Health Initiative), that was a gap in services in the community last year<\/em>; but now, there’s a new youth advisory group that’s making that one of their goals. \u00a0We just started civic engagement discussions (Breakin’ News), but starting in March,\u00a0Day One is hosting monthly civic engagement discussions (in response to the State of the Youth). \u00a0This doesn’t necessarily mean that we need to make our goals\/services completely unique from other groups, but we should ask ourselves: which efforts\u00a0are worth overlapping?<\/p>\n

We’re all here to work together. \u00a0The one big difference about the Teen Advisory Board is that library services are quite vast. We can define what we want our priorities to be.\u00a0Where do we fit in? \u00a0Where do we carve out a niche for ourselves?<\/p>\n
