{"id":3194,"date":"2016-08-22T11:55:05","date_gmt":"2016-08-22T18:55:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/teens\/?p=3194"},"modified":"2016-08-22T11:55:05","modified_gmt":"2016-08-22T18:55:05","slug":"teen-advisory-board-august-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/teens\/2016\/teen-advisory-board-august-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Teen Advisory Board &#8212; August 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Teen Advisory Board 8\/20\/2016<\/p>\n<p>Present: Chris, Frissel, Julia, KC, Brittany, Laura, Hadley, Madison, McKenna, David, Lucy, Jane L, Meep, Luke, Lauren<\/p>\n<h2>Agenda<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Announcements.<\/li>\n<li>Basic volunteer rules.<\/li>\n<li>Basic TAB rules.<\/li>\n<li>Review Summer Reading.<\/li>\n<li>Current projects<\/li>\n<li>Murder Mystery planning<\/li>\n<li>Continuing the discussion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Announcements<\/h2>\n<p>This is Julia\u2019s last TAB meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Lauren has been invited to be on the Youth Council. \u00a0Julia was previously our only representative on Youth Council, so this comes at a great time!<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Rules<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not share the code<\/li>\n<li>Wear your tag<\/li>\n<li>Do not let your friends\/family into the backrooms unless they are just waiting for you to leave (no more than 5 minutes)<\/li>\n<li>Do not hang out in the backrooms if you are not working at the time<\/li>\n<li>Put all supplies back<\/li>\n<li>Clean up (crumbs, water bottles, chips bags, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Check in with Jane (whenever available) or a children\u2019s staff member at scheduled shifts<\/li>\n<li>Report any misconduct<\/li>\n<li>Do not take it upon yourself to change the time of your scheduled shift; always ask first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are all established City of Pasadena policies and procedures.<\/p>\n<p>This is on the volunteer contract.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Basic TAB rules:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At least 1 monthly meeting ~ meetings are currently on a Saturday afternoon at 4pm; we may be adding another meeting on a weekday\u00a0in Fall 2016. (Must attend at least 75% of the Saturday meetings.)<\/li>\n<li>Year round commitment<\/li>\n<li>Additional individual project\/responsibility (Project shifts \u2013 as a TAB member, you are required to participate and take an interest in most teen services initiatives and programs; you show your interest by attending\/leading\/planning these events &amp; initiatives.)<\/li>\n<li>Wants to be a leader or gain skills to become a good leader<\/li>\n<li>Cares about our library and the wellness of teens in our community<\/li>\n<li>Excellent communication skills and highly dedicated<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work well independently and with the rest of TAB<\/li>\n<li>Tracking hours \u2013 anything you do at home (like editing the zine, online book lists) should be tracked in hours and reported<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How does one continue on TAB?<\/p>\n<p>Everything above, dedication, responsible, step up.\u00a0 I will be approaching everyone about special projects.\u00a0 I\u2019ll try to find the best fit.\u00a0 Shifts will ideally be during times I am available.<\/p>\n<h2>Review Summer Reading<\/h2>\n<p>Numbers: \u00a0This year, the teen program had 445 participants; last year, we had 379 teen participants. \u00a0Our retention rate compared to last year is close. \u00a0We were at 31% last year, and 26% this year. \u00a0The 12 year olds and the 18-19 year olds appreciated the option of participating in the teen program.<\/p>\n<p>Prizes: \u00a0The feedback from staff and random patrons generally show that the prizes were well liked, however, those that chose preferred books as their prizes and were used to the wide selection at Central Library, preferred last year&#8217;s method (which was a full cart of teen book selections); this is not the case at our branch libraries.<\/p>\n<p>Online system: \u00a0Comparing last year&#8217;s program to this year&#8217;s, the difference between using the Evanced vs. Reading by Design software was not entirely dissimilar. \u00a0TAB did not see an improvement in the interaction with the software, though noted that it was more intuitive to enter in their books read, but not their activity points.<\/p>\n<p>Badges: \u00a0Digital badges as a whole was not encouraging for most. \u00a0As a method to enter in their activities, they preferred last year&#8217;s method (which was simply typing in their activities and being rewarded a flat number of points) instead of this year&#8217;s&#8211;which required participants to search through pages of badges to find the right one.<\/p>\n<p>Points and earning prizes: \u00a0TAB wishes there was a way to show participants how many points they needed to earn to get a prize. \u00a0Since the software does not combine the points (reading points and activity points), it was not as clear when a prize was earned. \u00a0Also, they would like to do the weekly drawings again; this encourages participants to continue entering in their activities throughout the summer even if they&#8217;ve already picked up their 3 prizes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Current projects<\/h2>\n<h3>Mental Health Initiative<\/h3>\n<p>Sept. 3 (also next TAB meeting) \u2013 your statements about our mission<\/p>\n<p>Sept. 17 \u2013 book festival \u2013 Aija Mayrock, Kerry Kletter, Robin Reul, Ingrid Sundberg, Julie Buxbaum,<\/p>\n<p>Testing MH apps \u2013 thorough test and write reviews \u2013 someone with a lot of interest in this (Meep, Jane L?) calm, headspace, virtual hope box<\/p>\n<p>Advocacy toolkit \u2013 We\u2019ll try to schedule time with Day One, but most of this could be done virtually on Google Docs.<\/p>\n<p>Today, I interviewed two teen volunteers from Teen Line.<\/p>\n<p>Oct. 8 NAMI Ending the Silence<\/p>\n<p>Nov. staff training \u2013 Teen Mental Health First Aid<\/p>\n<p>Dec. movie \u2013 It\u2019s Kind of a Funny Story (depression, psychiatric hospital), based on a book by Ned Vizzini<\/p>\n<h3>YA Book Club<\/h3>\n<p>Sep-Dec meetings will be led by Kara. \u00a0Jane L. and McKenna will get an opportunity to co-lead meetings since Kara will be graduating next year.<\/p>\n<p>We still need to select titles for Nov +.<\/p>\n<p>We are considering applying for the book club to be a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/yalsa\/teenstopten\">YALSA Teens Top Ten<\/a> library.
