August meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Teen Advisory Board<\/p>\n<p>August 23, at 4pm, Central Library<\/p>\n<p>TAB members present:\u00a0 Michelle, Julia, Chris, Jerry, Haneen, Sarah ; missing: Ben, Kara<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>AGENDA NOTES<\/p>\n<p><b>Evaluating Teen Survey results<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most popular events (in order of popularity)\u2014Reading challenge,\u00a0Doctor Who,\u00a0Swordfighting, Give back\/volunteering,\u00a0Knot it,\u00a0Book clubs\/discussions,\u00a0Animals<\/li>\n<li>Most requested events (in order of most mentioned) \u2013Crafts\/gifts,\u00a0Art\/Drawing\/Photography,\u00a0Fandoms\/book parties,\u00a0Book clubs\/discussions,\u00a0Contests<b>,\u00a0<\/b>Reading challenges\/free books,\u00a0Games,\u00a0Author events,\u00a0Movies,\u00a0Writing<b>,\u00a0<\/b>Music, Cooking,\u00a0Swordfighting<\/li>\n<li>Note: \u00a0When evaluating survey results, think about how teens view the library.\u00a0 You\u2019ll notice that things that they already associate with the library rank high on the list (book events, reading).\u00a0 Also notice something not usually associated with the library such as Swordfighting is mentioned, but probably only because we offered it this year; if we had not offered it, would teens have known to ask for it?<\/li>\n<li>Time\/availability\u2014 times that are the best for teen programs: Fri afternoon, Sat &amp; Sun, holiday breaks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Evaluating Teen Summer Reading program statistics<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teen SRC: \u00a0Registration:\u00a0 379 &#8212; Highest registration by branch: \u00a0Central (156), Hastings (84), La Pintoresca (46), Santa Catalina (23)<\/li>\n<li>Most of the activities were logged in the month of June.\u00a0 Why did some registered teens not participate?\u00a0 Computer access?\u00a0 Does not know how?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Comments from TAB:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Links look confusing on Evanced<\/li>\n<li>Webpage is confusing; difficult to see the link to the online SRC<\/li>\n<li>Younger teens may not know how to log activities<\/li>\n<li>Should consider having an SRC app for mobile devices<\/li>\n<li>Computer set up in the teen area<\/li>\n<li>Should send more regular email updates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Programs\/events attendance<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most popular at Central this summer (in order of most attended): \u00a0Doctor Who, Swordfighting,\u00a0Monopoly<\/li>\n<li>Most popular at La Pintoresca: \u00a0Game Maker \u2013tweens+teens,\u00a0Skateboard design,\u00a0Manga Drawing<\/li>\n<li>Programs\/events during the school year\u2014most popular at Central in order of most attended): \u00a0Teen Book Festival (Apr 2014),\u00a0Roaring 20s Poetry Night (Apr 2014),\u00a0Student Open Mic Night (Apr 2014),\u00a0YA Book Swap (Oct 2013),\u00a0Steampunk Gifts (Dec 2013)<\/li>\n<li>Above all else\u2014most teen engagement is through <b>teen volunteers<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Comments from TAB:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sarah recommends Graphic design to tie in with Teen Zine<\/li>\n<li>Michelle would like a Cooking class<\/li>\n<li>Movie nights<\/li>\n<li>Julia notes that many teens are unaware of what the library offers<\/li>\n<li>flyers at the school is considered the best way to get information to teens<\/li>\n<li>Chris attended many of the programs; thought the skateboard design and swordfighting was cool<\/li>\n<li>Julia likes programs that make gifts; art &amp; crafts<\/li>\n<li>Jerry says craft programs, but maybe more unique offerings (not only jewelry or paper crafts)<\/li>\n<li>Overall consensus: more fandom events<\/li>\n<li>Programs should be during vacation\/weekend; teens have so much to do<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How are we responding to this?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Programs will be moved to better time slots like Friday afternoons, Saturdays\/Sundays, holidays<\/li>\n<li>Better promote book clubs\u2014perhaps with better time slot, more teens will be interested<\/li>\n<li>Better promote contests<\/li>\n<li>Next year: fandom events:\u00a0 Halloween\/Sherlock (Oct), Harry Potter (Aug), Game of Thrones (Spring?); Author event: Book festival&#8211;&#8220;Pasadena Loves YA&#8221; (Jul); Maker programs monthly or bi-monthly starting in Dec (Geeky Gifts); adding some game days, movies during the holidays; more art shows\/readings for teens;
