Teen Advisory Board 3/13/2017

Present:  Angel (Meep), Haneen, Bella, Jane L, Lauren, Liliana, Lucy, Madison, Maya, Mckenna, Nina, Sophie

Below are brief notes from our meeting.

Pre-meeting assignment

Research the following topic:  Why are libraries essential to teens?

Go through this research, and highlight parts that speak directly to you. Think about why you joined TAB in the first place. What were you expecting out of your experience?

Next, spend another hour and look at the Youth Master Plan, pages 16-23, and see where the library can support these priorities.

Library services are defined by the surrounding community. For instance, the services we talked about last year in May (when we decided on the Mental Health Initiative), that was a gap in services in the community last year; but now, there’s a new youth advisory group that’s making that one of their goals.  We just started civic engagement discussions (Breakin’ News), but starting in March, Day One is hosting monthly civic engagement discussions (in response to the State of the Youth).  This doesn’t necessarily mean that we need to make our goals/services completely unique from other groups, but we should ask ourselves: which efforts are worth overlapping?

Review these Pasadena youth groups:  http://cityofpasadena.libguides.com/webteen/youthleaders

We’re all here to work together.  The one big difference about the Teen Advisory Board is that library services are quite vast. We can define what we want our priorities to be. Where do we fit in?  Where do we carve out a niche for ourselves?

Pasadena Public Library’s mission:  The mission of the Pasadena Public Library, a basic municipal service, is to be an information center for the Pasadena community in order to preserve and encourage the free expression of ideas essential to an informed citizenry.

Our April meeting will be dedicated to discussing our mission and our goals for the next year.  Those of you who are on a committee (mission/vision committee or one of the strategic plan committees), please have your notes completed by April 3.  This will give everyone a week to review them all before the meeting.
