The winter session of Toddler storytime is underway and our\u00a0theme for the\u00a0first meeting was\u00a0BUILDING!\u00a0 We talked about the letter B and the many words that start with B (including the word building), read books about building with blocks and bricks, and had lots of\u00a0fun singing songs that revolved around dump trucks and tools.\u00a0 (And that’s just for starters).\u00a0 Listed below are\u00a0the books,\u00a0songs, rhymes, flannel stories, activities and video we explored about our topic.<\/p>\n

Books We Shared<\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u00a0 \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Blocks<\/strong><\/span><\/a> by Irene Dickson is a story about learning to share.\u00a0\u00a0The book opens with Ruby playing with her red blocks and Benji playing with his blue blocks.\u00a0\u00a0Chaos ensues when Benji decides to take one of Ruby’s red blocks.\u00a0 There’s a “toddler” tussle and all of the blocks come crashing down.\u00a0 Is there a resolution?\u00a0 Why yes!\u00a0 After the crash the red and blue blocks are all mixed together and Ruby and Benji discover that sharing their blocks makes for double the fun.\u00a0 Enter Guy – he brings over some green blocks.\u00a0 What will happen now?\u00a0 We can only guess.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0Stanley the Builder<\/span> <\/strong><\/a>by Williambee,\u00a0Myrtle needs a house\u00a0built on her new plot of land.\u00a0\u00a0She\u00a0asks her friend Stanley to build her one!\u00a0 Stanley gets to work and\u00a0clears the site with a bulldozer, digs the foundation with a\u00a0digger, and gets some help from his friend Charlie in laying the\u00a0cement.\u00a0 They both work together to lay the bricks, attach the roof and put in the windows and doors.\u00a0 Finally, they paint the house in Myrtle’s favorite colors (red, white and blue) and Voila!\u00a0– Myrtle has her beautiful new house!\u00a0 She thanks them and Stanley heads home to his own house where he eats his supper, takes a bath and gets right to bed!\u00a0 Pretty amazing that he was able to build that house in one day!\u00a0 Colorful illustrations, simple text and a linear story make this a perfect read for toddlers.<\/p>\n

We talked about the letter B\u00a0and brought out some things that begin with the letter B.\u00a0 There was a bat, a baby, a bottle and a balloon!\u00a0 The children had fun guessing as I pulled out each flannel piece.\u00a0 We also practiced making the B sound!<\/p>\n
