Our \u201cArt & Play\u201d program for children ages 2-6 focuses on \u201cprocess art\u201d. With\u00a0process art the fun is all in the doing, there are no rules;\u00a0 it involves exploration and tactile learning with\u00a0no specific outcome.\u00a0 In the end you always end\u00a0up with a work of art, even if it isn\u2019t planned!\u00a0 We host this program once a month at our Central Library.<\/p>\n

For November, we focused on making yogurt silly putty!\u00a0 We gave the kids a plastic bowl filled with a mixture of yogurt and corn starch.\u00a0 Then each child\u00a0used a spoon\u00a0to mix the materials until they created a thick paste with the consistency of silly putty or dough!\u00a0 They could squish, push, reshape or pull it apart.\u00a0 We also gave them child-proof cookie cutters to create a variety of shapes.\u00a0 A\u00a0few latecomers got to experiment with mixing baking powder and shaving cream since we\u00a0ran out of cornstarch and yogurt.\u00a0 No matter the ingredients, everyone learned and had fun exploring!<\/p>\n

The Art Supplies<\/h3>\n

We purchased some cornstarch and plain\u00a0yogurt (the cheapest we could find) for our process art project.\u00a0 We also used sturdy\u00a0plastic bowls and plastic spoons for mixing the ingredients.\u00a0 All of these ingredients\/items can\u00a0easily be found at\u00a0discount stores like The Dollar Tree<\/strong> or the 99 Cent Store<\/strong>.\u00a0 If you’re on a really tight budget,\u00a0you can see\u00a0if you have any of these\u00a0items lying around at home.\u00a0 Most of\u00a0us have a bit of cornstarch in our pantries and maybe even some yogurt, right?\u00a0 [FYI, any yogurt flavor works, we just happened to use plain.]\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

For children with\u00a0allergies to dairy products,\u00a0you can replace the yogurt with\u00a0shaving cream and the cornstarch with baking powder.\u00a0 It doesn’t give you the sam<\/em>e doughy consistency<\/em>, but children can still have\u00a0a lot of fun mixing, squishing, pressing and playing.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Process<\/h3>\n

What can you do with silly putty or dough?\u00a0 What happens when you\u00a0add too much cornstarch or \u00a0too little with the yogurt?\u00a0 How can you make your mixture less sticky?\u00a0 How much yogurt and cornstarch makes the perfect dough?\u00a0 What does it feel like to pull the putty\u00a0apart, to\u00a0squish it together, to press it flat onto the table and put a cookie cutter through it?\u00a0 Our artists\/explorers found the answers to those questions and more!
