We snuck “into the woods” <\/em>for our \u00a0preschool storytime on Saturday.\u00a0 We read a story about two\u00a0teddy bears who were “lost in the woods”,\u00a0followed a group of children “into the\u00a0woods”\u00a0as they searched for a moose, and were introduced\u00a0to some\u00a0very strange night animals “living in the woods”.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sound\u00a0silly to you?\u00a0\u00a0 Maybe\u00a0just a little, but it was still a whole lot of fun.\u00a0 Here are some of the books, songs\u00a0and activities we shared.<\/p>\n

Where’s My Teddy?<\/a><\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong>by Jed Alborough is a cute story about a little boy named Eddie who\u00a0goes searching for his lost teddy<\/span> bear in the deep, dark woods.\u00a0 Of course he runs into more than just his\u00a0teddy!\u00a0 He crosses paths with a gigantic bear who has also lost his\u00a0teddy.\u00a0 Trouble ensues as\u00a0they each try to find\u00a0their\u00a0very own, treasured bedtime friend.\u00a0 A great read aloud with humor and suspense making this\u00a0a perfect book for preschoolers.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0Looking for a Moose<\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>by Phyllis Root we find some children who are desperate to see their very first moose!\u00a0\u00a0Do they succeed?\u00a0 Well yes but not until they’ve traipsed through a swamp, some prickly bushes and a\u00a0few other woodsy obstacles.\u00a0\u00a0Great tongue twisting, rhyming text and a journey\u00a0through some rough terrain please\u00a0both the adventurers and the linguists of the preschool set.<\/p>\n

Glenna Marino’s\u00a0funny picture book, Night Animals<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, we are introduced to some silly night animals who are deathly afraid of running into “night animals”.\u00a0 Wait!\u00a0 That doesn’t make sense!\u00a0 Eventually a bat sets them straight and tells them that they ARE night animals.\u00a0 Funny with amazing visuals (black, white and grey) and an aha moment at the end.\u00a0 The preschoolers (and the adults) loved it!<\/p>\n

Little Bear and his Mama woke up from their long winter\u2019s nap (stretch and yawn). Little Bear was so hungry his tummy went grumble grumble<\/em>.\u00a0 Mama Bear was hungry too, so they stepped outside their cave and looked around.\u00a0 In the clearing was the tree stump where they always ate their feast.\u00a0 Little Bear hopped up and sniffed around- sniff sniff sniff<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMama, where\u2019s the food?\u201d he asked.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m hungry!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to go get it, silly,\u201d Mama Bear said.\u00a0 \u201cWhy don\u2019t you go get the blueberries?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay!\u201d Baby bear jumped down from the stump and ran to the woods (pat knees quickly to imitate running).\u00a0 He looked high (pretend to look high) and he looked low (pretend to look low). \u00a0He looked all around until he thought he saw some blueberries, then he went back.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook Mama, blueberries!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo Baby Bear,\u201d Mama said, laughing.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s not a blueberry.\u00a0 That\u2019s a \u2013 (pause to let children respond) fish!\u00a0 This time go past the stream.\u201d<\/p>\n

So Baby Bear went running back to the woods again (pat knees).\u00a0 He looked high (pretend to look high) and he looked low (pretend to look low). He looked all around until he thought he saw some blueberries, then he went back.<\/p>\n

This time he was gone such a long time Mama Bear started to get worried.\u00a0 But then Baby Bear came back and he said, \u201cLook, Mama, blueberries!\u00a0 And I found Daddy too!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes Little Bear, those are blueberries,\u201d Mama Bear said.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019re both just in time for dinner.<\/p>\n
