elevating them and helping them to soar,\u201d <em>Megan Koufos<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sensory Storytime is a fun, interactive, educational\u00a0storytime designed for preschool age children with autism and\/or sensory challenges.\u00a0 It involves books, songs, movement and\u00a0therapeutic play\u00a0that incorporate the five senses.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you would like to learn more about Sensory Storytime<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 class=\"font-headlines\">Spring\/SummerSession \u2013\u00a01st\u00a0Meeting<\/h4>\n<h5 class=\"font-headlines\">THEME:\u00a0 Gardens<\/h5>\n<h4 class=\"font-headlines\">Stories<\/h4>\n<p>The books chosen for Sensory Storytime are the same books we would choose for a toddler or preschool storytime.\u00a0 They need to be colorful with simple text and a well-defined concept or a linear, easy-to-follow story.\u00a0 If we have a group of children who have difficulty sitting through even a few pages, we can paraphrase the text or use props such as handheld puppets to\u00a0encourage engagement.<\/p>\n<p>Listed below are two books that were used for the first\u00a0storytime of our spring\/summer session.\u00a0 Click onto the images below body parts (knee, head, toe, elbow)\u00a0and also asks the children to hold the beanbag up high and down low.<\/li>\n<li>The movements help with body identification, developing fine and gross motor skills and with following directions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"font-headlines\">Closing Songs<\/h4>\n<p>We try to maintain consistency with the songs and activities we use in our Sensory Storytime sessions.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The repetition builds familiarity and provides the predictability children with autism require.\u00a0 Sessions generally last 5-6 weeks with one meeting a week.<\/p>\n<p>Two universally known songs that are always big hits are <em>Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Itsy Bitsy Spider<\/em>.\u00a0 The finger movements used with the songs help class=\"font-headlines\">FREE PLAY<\/h4>\n<p>Each Sensory Storytime ends with roughly 20 minutes of free play.\u00a0 For free play, we pull out some therapeutic play materials to facilitate sensory
