Even though it’s a hot 94\u00b0 here, September always makes me think about autumn and starting school.\u00a0 So what better theme for our first September preschool storytime than apples?<\/p>\n

Books We Shared<\/span><\/h2>\n

Our first story today was Ouch!<\/span> by Ragnhild Scamell, illustrated by Michael Terry<\/a>.\u00a0 Poor Hedgehog is just trying to fit into her nest for the winter, when an apple falls from the tree and is stuck in her quills.\u00a0 Even though her well-meaning friends try to help her out, things just go from bad to worse.\u00a0 Who will help Hedgehog?\u00a0 To find out, pick up this fun story at your local branch.\u00a0 The second book we read incorporates the alphabet into the story – Apple Pie ABC<\/span> by Alison Murray<\/a>.\u00a0 When a young girl bakes an apple pie, her dog wants a bite of it, and he will not be deterred.<\/span><\/p>\n

Flannelboard Stories<\/span><\/h2>\n

Today we shared two flannelboard stories about apples.\u00a0 The first, A-P-P-L-E, was based on the song BINGO.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"A-P-P-L-E<\/a>
\nWe started with all the letters on the flannelboard and sang:<\/p>\n

(to the tune of BINGO)
\n“There is a fruit I like to eat and apple is its name-o.
\nA-P-P-L-E
\nA-P-P-L-E
\nA-P-P-L-E
\nand apple is its name-o”<\/p>\n

Then we turned the first letter over.\u00a0 Each time there was a blank apple, we clapped in place of the letter.
\n\"A-P-P-L-E<\/a><\/p>\n

“There is a fruit I like to eat and apple is its name-o.
\nclap<\/em>–clap<\/em>-P-L-E
\nclap<\/em>–clap<\/em>-P-L-E
\nclap<\/em>–clap<\/em>-P-L-E
\nand apple is its name-o”<\/p>\n

Continue this way until you’re clapping all the letters.<\/p>\n

Our second flannelboard was, “An Apple Tree”.\u00a0 We said a rhyme and did the accompanying motions.<\/p>\n

\nAn Apple Tree<\/span><\/em>
\nWay up high in the apple tree (lift hands above head)
\n<\/em>Four red apples (hold up 4 fingers)
\n<\/em>smiled at me (smile)
\n<\/em>So I shook that tree as hard as I could (pretend to shake the tree)
\n<\/em>And down came an apple.
\n<\/em>Mmm… was it good! (rub tummy).<\/em><\/p>\n

Continue with the rhyme until all apples have been eaten!<\/p>\n

Film We Watched<\/span><\/h2>\n

Today we watched Chicka Chicka 1,2,3<\/a>, based on the book of the same name by Bill Martin Jr<\/a>, available on the DVD Chicka Chicka 1,2,3 and more stories about counting.\u00a0 In it, playful numbers climb their way to the top of the apple tree.\u00a0 But will there be a place for zero?<\/span><\/p>\n
