I love to start storytimes with some kind of sensory activity, after our opening song. So today we did a “science” experiment — what rolls, and what doesn’t? (Many thanks to the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives<\/a> for this idea which I found in their Cars storytime resources<\/a>!) We tested the toys and items on a ramp to see if they roll. Does a frying pan roll? How about a fire truck? Does a block roll? How about a cylinder block? We also practiced sorting things according to whether they roll or not. It was lots of fun exploring the world just the way babies and toddlers do–by testing it out like little scientists:<\/p>\n

Then we read an adorable book with lots of opportunities for making over-the-top accents and silly sounds: And the cars go–<\/a> by William Bee.<\/p>\n

Toddlers sang “Twinkle Twinkle Traffic Light”:<\/p>\n

Twinkle, Twinkle Traffic Light
\nTwinkle, twinkle traffic light
\nRound the corner shining bright.
\nRed means stop, green means go,
\nYellow means wait, even if you\u2019re late!
\nTwinkle, twinkle traffic light

While infants bounced up and down to “The Family Car”:<\/p>\n

Sometimes I ride in the family car.
\nThe engine jerks so we cannot go far.
\nPop, pop, pop, pop!
\nPop, pop, pop! Juggle, jiggle, Jat!
\nWhat’s the matter? Why the tire is flat! Ssssssssss!

We learned the sign language for various different vehicles while singing a song:<\/p>\n

\nHow will I get there?
\nI know! I\u2019ll take the CAR!<\/p>\n

But how will I stay safe in the car?
\nI know! My seatbelt!<\/p>\n

I wear my seatbelt in the car
\nIn the car, in the car,
\nI wear my seatbelt in the car,
\nAnd it keeps me safe.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s another way I can get
\nOut of town? I know! A BIKE!<\/p>\n

I wear my helmet on my bike,
\nOn my bike, on my bike,
\nI wear my helmet on my bike,
\nAnd it keeps me safe.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s another way I can get
\nOut of town? I know! A MOTORCYLE!<\/p>\n

I wear my helmet on my motorcycle,
\nMotorcycle, motorcycle
\nI wear my helmet on my motorcycle,
\nAnd it keeps me safe.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s another way I can get
\nOut of town? I know! A TRAIN!<\/p>\n

I stay in my seat when I\u2019m on the train
\nOn the train, on the train,
\nI stay in my seat when I\u2019m on the train
\nThat way I stay safe.<\/p>\n

Now I want to go really FAR out of town.
\nHow can I get there? I know! A PLANE!<\/p>\n

I stay in my seat when I\u2019m on the plane
\nOn the plane, on the plane,
\nI stay in my seat when I\u2019m on the plane
\nThat way I stay safe.<\/p>\n

(I made this up but was inspired by an idea I read in Baby Storytime Magic<\/a> by Kathy MacMillan and Christine Kirker)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

After doing this flannelboard activity we reinforced the signs by reading How Fast Can You Go? by Kate Riggs and illustrated by Nate Williams:<\/p>\n

Then we played a game: Red Light, Green Light, Yellow Light! We sped up, slowed down or stopped running depending on what I shouted out.<\/p>\n

We sang some other songs like “Bumping up and down in my little red wagon” and “Wheels on the Bus.” Toddlers sang a cute song called “Old MacDonald Had a Car”:<\/p>\n

Old MacDonald Had a Car
\nOld MacDonald had a car E-I-E-I-O
\nAnd on this car there was a horn E-I-E-I-O
\nWith a beep beep here And a beep beep there
\nHere a beep, there a beep Everywhere a beep beep

Our video for the toddler group today was “The New Car” from the Peppa Pig Muddy Puddles and other Stories DVD<\/a>:<\/p>\n
