{"id":5245,"date":"2016-02-22T00:42:40","date_gmt":"2016-02-22T00:42:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/?p=5245"},"modified":"2016-11-15T17:28:30","modified_gmt":"2016-11-16T01:28:30","slug":"family-storytime-birds-february-20-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/2016\/family-storytime-birds-february-20-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Family Storytime &#8211; BIRDS! &#8211; February 20, 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We had a blast in our family storytime today!\u00a0 Our theme was simple &#8211; <em>Birds<\/em> &#8211; but the books we shared weren&#8217;t exactly ordinary.\u00a0 Since we had a broad range of ages, I tried to read a book for each developmental level &#8211; I was pleasantly surprised when all of them held some interest for each child, regardless of age.\u00a0 Here are some of the stories &amp; activities we shared:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/shhh.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5246\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5246 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/shhh.png\" alt=\"shhh\" width=\"312\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chris Naughton does a great job of building suspense and leaving us in stitches in <strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Shh! We Have a<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Plan<\/span><\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Four friends are on the hunt for a beautiful bird&#8230;the youngest member of the team seems to have a habit of yelling &#8220;Hi Birdie!!&#8221; right when they&#8217;re all trying to catch the bird by surprise.\u00a0 But <em>shh!\u00a0 &#8211; they have a plan<\/em>!\u00a0 Of course these plans don&#8217;t seem to work out as the bird escapes their net every time.\u00a0 Eventually the littlest member of the group offers the bird some bread and the rest is history.\u00a0 A really fun read aloud that invites audience participation.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/night-owl.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5242\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5242 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/night-owl.jpg\" alt=\"night owl\" width=\"260\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For the babies and toddlers in the audience, I read <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><em>Night Owl<\/em> <\/strong><\/span>-a sweet story by Toni Yuly.\u00a0 Night Owl\u00a0stays up late and is very brave UNTIL she realizes she&#8217;s lost sight of her mommy.\u00a0 She strains to hear her mother&#8217;s hoooot!\u00a0 Before she finds her mommy she hears tap, toot, chirrup and croak&#8230;then it&#8217;s thunder, rumble, BOOM!\u00a0 (These are not the sounds of her momma!)\u00a0 She flies back home, hoping to hear her mommy&#8217;s familiar voice.\u00a0 Finally, as she sits up in the tree and listens one more time&#8230;she hears a faint hoooot!\u00a0 Guess who that is?\u00a0 Great visuals and simple text make this a great book for the wee ones&#8230;the older children seemed to enjoy it too.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/birds.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5247\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5247 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/birds-248x300.jpg\" alt=\"birds\" width=\"248\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/birds-248x300.jpg 248w, http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/birds.jpg 290w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 248px) 100vw, 248px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><em>Birds<\/em><\/strong><\/span> by Kevin Henkes (illustrated by Laura Dronzek) is simple, yet profound.\u00a0 Beautifully illustrated with vivid colors and dramatic imagery, we get the simple story of birds &#8211; their various colors, their shapes, their behavior as they perch on wires (then disappear), their ability to fill a tree and then fly away in flocks , their beautiful singing voices&#8230;a young girl likes to imitate birds and pretend to fly, but she can&#8217;t fly&#8230;however, she can sing like a bird.\u00a0 A feast for the eyes and a good book to read to toddlers or preschoolers.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>OUR FLANNEL STORIES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Five Little Birds<\/em><\/p>\n<p>1 little bird with feathers of blue, flew beside the green one and then there were 2<\/p>\n<p>2 little birds singing in the tree, the red one came to join them and then there were 3<\/p>\n<p>3 little birds wishing there were more, along came the pink bird and then there were 4<\/p>\n<p>4 little birds happy to be alive, found a yellow one and then there were 5<\/p>\n<p>5 little birds happy as can be, singing beautiful songs just for you and me!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>A House for Birdie<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5248 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/HOUSE-FOR-BIRD-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"HOUSE FOR BIRD\" width=\"281\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/HOUSE-FOR-BIRD-232x300.jpg 232w, http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/HOUSE-FOR-BIRD.jpg 415w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 281px) 100vw, 281px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Birdie was tired of getting cold and wet during the winter months.\u00a0 Soooo she called upon her friends Rex the rectangle-shaped bird, Olive the oval-shaped bird, and Tri the triangle-shaped bird\u00a0to help her find the perfect &#8220;bird&#8221; house.\u00a0 Birdie looked more like a circle-shaped bird.\u00a0 Unfortunately, her friends were able to find their &#8220;perfectly shaped&#8221; bird homes but not Birdie&#8230;there just weren&#8217;t any homes that fit her shape.\u00a0 She was broken hearted and flew away to lament the fact that she couldn&#8217;t find a home that fit her &#8220;perfectly&#8221;&#8230;\u00a0 Luckily for Birdie, the story doesn&#8217;t end there.\u00a0 Birdie&#8217;s friends decide to build her a house shaped just for her so the story comes &#8220;full circle&#8221;
