At today’s storytime most of the kids came dressed up as cute little pirates, princesses, TV characters and animals in celebration of Halloween this week! Our theme was stories about dressing up, appropriate to the occasion. First we distributed colorful scarves to everyone, and we learned a song:<\/p>\n

One bright scarf waiting for the wind to blow
\nToss is up high and wave it down low
\nWiggle it fast and wiggle it slow
\n(hide it) Hey! Where did it go?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Then we read a story called It’s Halloween Night<\/a> by Jennifer O’Connell and illustrated by Jennifer Morris. It’s a book that invites kids to guess what each child’s costume is for Halloween, based on a few characteristics of what they’re wearing.<\/p>\n

We sang a song to the tune of “Do You Know the Muffin Man?”:<\/p>\n

Can you paint like an artist, like an artist, like an artist?
\nCan you paint like an artist when you grow up?
\nCan you cook like a chef?…
\nCan you swim like a diver?…
\nCan you ride like a cowboy?…<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Then we did a flannelboard story about five little trick-or-treaters:<\/p>\n

Knock, knock, knock, who’s at my door?
\nSounds like a trick-or-treater at my door!
\nI open the door and what do I see?
\nA cute little ___________ smiling at me!

We sang a song about getting dressed, to the tune of “If You’re Happy and You Know It”:<\/p>\n

Oh my hat goes on my head, on my head
\nOh my hat goes on my head, on my head
\nI’m getting ready now to go outside and play
\nOh my hat goes on my head, on my head<\/p>\n

Oh my boots go on my feet, on my feet…<\/p>\n

Oh my coat goes on my arms, on my arms…<\/p>\n

Oh my gloves go on my hands, on my hands…<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We read a book I brought from home called Book ‘o Masks: A Wearable Book<\/em> by Donald Lemke and Bob Lentz. Apart from being a great read for our theme, this is a fun book for the boys in the family (dads included) and it’s one of my 2-yr-old son’s favorites! It was a big hit with toddlers and parents as they watched the top half of my face transform me into someone else!<\/p>\n

We sang Where is Thumbkin? and Peekabo with our scarves:<\/p>\n

Finally, we saw another Max & Ruby video, the episode “Max’s Halloween” from the DVD Max & Ruby’s Halloween<\/a>.<\/p>\n
