I&#8217;ve always wanted to do a storytime like this, because I&#8217;m really into jazz and blues.  We started off with a song from Brother Yusef&#8217;s album <a href=\"http:\/\/pgpl-mt.iii.com\/iii\/encore_pasadena\/record\/C__Rb1373854__Sbrother%20yusef%20kids%20get%20blues__Orightresult__X2?lang=eng&amp;suite=pasadena\" target=\"_blank\">Kids Get the Blues Too<\/a>, and the song is called &#8220;Good Morning, Blues.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pgpl-mt.iii.com\/iii\/encore_pasadena\/record\/C__Rb1373854__Sbrother%20yusef%20kids%20get%20blues__Orightresult__X2?lang=eng&amp;suite=pasadena\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images.cdbaby.name\/b\/r\/brotheryusef06.jpg\" alt=\"Kids Get the Blues, Too\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Good morning, Blues.  Blues how do you do?<br \/>\nGood morning, Blues.  Blues how do you do?<br \/>\nI&#8217;m doing all right&#8211;tell me, how about you?<\/p>\n<p>Woke up this morning, Blues walking round my bed<br \/>\nWoke up this morning, Blues walking round my bed<br \/>\nAnd then I turned over, and this is what I said:<\/p>\n<p>Chorus:<br \/>\nGood morning Blues, good morning Blues<br \/>\nGood morning Blues, how are you?<\/p>\n<p>I went to bed last night, I was turning from side to side<br \/>\nI went to bed last night, I was turning from side to side<br \/>\nBlues had me so sad, I lay down and cried<\/p>\n<p>Woke up this morning, Blues walking round my bed<br \/>\nWoke up this morning, Blues walking round my bed<br \/>\nI sat down to breakfast, the Blues was in my grits and bread!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\nWe read <a href=\"http:\/\/pgpl-mt.iii.com\/iii\/encore_pasadena\/record\/C__Rb1458008__Severybody%20gets%20the%20blues__Orightresult__U__X6?lang=eng&amp;suite=pasadena\" target=\"_blank\">Everybody Gets the Blues<\/a> by Leslie Staub and illustrated by R. G. Roth.  I like this book and the way it starts out kinda sad, but elevates the reader with its happy ending.  I paired it with a song from one of the library&#8217;s jazz CDs, <a href=\"http:\/\/pgpl-mt.iii.com\/iii\/encore_pasadena\/record\/C__Rb1388688__Sgolden%20years%20of%20jazz__Orightresult__U__X6?lang=eng&amp;suite=pasadena\" target=\"_blank\">The Golden Years of Jazz<\/a>.  The song is Track 12, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=toeVtAu_zKM\" target=\"_blank\">Laura<\/a>&#8221; performed by the Don Byas Quartet.\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pgpl-mt.iii.com\/iii\/encore_pasadena\/record\/C__Rb1458008__Severybody%20gets%20the%20blues__Orightresult__U__X6?lang=eng&amp;suite=pasadena\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/d.gr-assets.com\/books\/1328833153l\/12225659.jpg\" alt=\"Everybody Gets the Blues\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nWe did an activity with shaker eggs, counting from one to ten and back down to one, and sang &#8220;One little, two little, three little shaker eggs.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThen we did a felt board activity where we tried to match the instruments to their sounds.  We talked about onomatopoeia and how all these words describe both an action and a sound.\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2015\/06\/photo-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2015\/06\/photo-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"photo-2\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3810\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2015\/06\/photo-2-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/10\/files\/sites\/10\/2015\/06\/photo-2.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nWe then read and sang to a hilarious book called <a href=\"http:\/\/pgpl-mt.iii.com\/iii\/encore_pasadena\/record\/C__Rb1519445__Sbabys%20got%20blues__Orightresult__U__X2?lang=eng&amp;suite=pasadena\" target=\"_blank\">Baby&#8217;s Got the Blues<\/a> by Carol Diggory Shields and illustrated by Lauren Tobia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pgpl-mt.iii.com\/iii\/encore_pasadena\/record\/C__Rb1519445__Sbabys%20got%20blues__Orightresult__U__X2?lang=eng&amp;suite=pasadena\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.laurentobia.com\/uploads\/2\/1\/7\/9\/21796894\/8420998_orig.jpg\" alt=\"Baby's Got the Blues\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nThe book is written in perfect 12-bar blues time so I sang it with the help of a backup track I downloaded from the internet.  You can use it too to sing this book! (Many thanks to its Russian creator for making this wonderful music library available for free download!)\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWe watched a video with the one and only B.B. King (rest in peace).  It&#8217;s a video he did for Sandra Boynton, author of a lot of fun board books and picture books. We danced to another tune from the jazz CD <a href=\"http:\/\/pgpl-mt.iii.com\/iii\/encore_pasadena\/record\/C__Rb1388688__Sgolden%20years%20of%20jazz__Orightresult__U__X6?lang=eng&amp;suite=pasadena\" target=\"_blank\">The Golden Years of Jazz<\/a>.
