{"id":2825,"date":"2015-04-06T21:58:08","date_gmt":"2015-04-07T04:58:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/?p=2825"},"modified":"2016-12-06T19:50:15","modified_gmt":"2016-12-07T03:50:15","slug":"ocos-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/2015\/ocos-contest\/","title":{"rendered":"One City One Story Contest Winners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The One City, One Story Contest winners have been announced! \u00a0Thank you to all participants for your submissions. \u00a0We received over 50 entries, so it was a tough decision!<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to our winners! \u00a0We announced and\u00a0showcased the winning entries\u00a0during a reception\u00a0on One City, One Story Day on March 28, 2015.\u00a0The winning entries are currently featured in the Great Hall at Central Library, and will remain there until the end of the month. \u00a0We will also feature the contests in our May issue of Off the Shelf, and for teen participants, we will feature them in the Fall 2015 issue of the Teen Zine.<\/p>\n<p>Both contests were based loosely on the 2015 One City, One Story selection, <em>The Book of Unknown Americans<\/em> by Christina Henriquez.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">&#8220;Tell Your Story&#8221; Writing Contest<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Guidelines: \u00a0Submit an original short story of how you or a family member came to America. \u00a0Stories can depict a family tale (true or fictionalized) or explore the topic of what it means to be an American. \u00a0Judges were asked to consider themes of family, being an American, and immigration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">First place winners received $100 Visa gift cards; second place winners received $50 Visa gift cards; third place winners received $25 Visa gift cards.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Winners for grades 3-5<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1st place<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn Chen, Grade 3<\/p>\n<p>Title: \u00a0\u201cWhere I Belong\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Summary: \u00a0A young Japanese-American girl, whose been adopted by an American family, ponders her mixed heritage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/2015\/evelyn-chen\/\">READ IT HERE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2nd place<\/p>\n<p>Gwendolyn Lopez, Grade 4<\/p>\n<p>Title: \u00a0\u201cThe Letter\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Summary: \u00a0In\u00a0Mexico, a story about a\u00a0grandfather and great-uncle dreamed of the American Dream and lay in suspense as they wait for an important letter that could make that dream come true.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/2015\/the-letter-by-gwendolyn-lopez\/\">READ IT HERE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3rd place<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Smithwick, Grade 5<\/p>\n<p>Title: \u00a0\u201cMy Family\u2019s American Story\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Summary: \u00a0A glimpse into several of Smithwick&#8217;s\u00a0ancestors while marking significant moments in history, starting from 1642, the moment one of his ancestors set sail to America.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/2015\/my-familys-american-story-by-andrew-smithwick\/\">READ IT HERE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Winners for grades 6-8<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1st place<\/p>\n<p>Kaitlyn Chiu, Grade 6<\/p>\n<p>Title: \u00a0\u201cThe Cost of Freedom\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Summary: \u00a0The harsh adventures of a 14 year old boy as he encounters communist soldiers, pirates, and generous strangers during his flight to freedom.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/2015\/the-cost-of-freedom-by-kaitlyn-chiu\/\">READ IT HERE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2nd place<\/p>\n<p>Uriah Foster, Grade 7<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJaol Esgo\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Summary: \u00a0In the 1840s, a story of a young man from Ghana named Jaol Esgo, who journeys to America, sold as a slave, and finally joins the Underground Railroad.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/teens\/2015\/jaol-esgo-short-story-by-uriah-foster\/\" target=\"_blank\">READ IT HERE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3rd place<\/p>\n<p>Eva Lindholm, Grade 6<\/p>\n<p>Title: \u00a0\u201cA Young Girl\u2019s Journey: Mexico to America\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Summary: \u00a0A young Latina girl moves to America, but even in a different country, she still struggles with the same injustices and emotions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/2015\/a-young-girls-journey-mexico-to-america-by-eva-lindholm\/\">READ IT HERE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">Winners for grades 9-12<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1st place<\/p>\n<p>Judah Foster, Grade 9<\/p>\n<p>Title: \u00a0\u201cLand of the Free\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Summary: \u00a0A thirteen year old African boy is kidnapped and subjected through the stages of being sold as a slave.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/teens\/2015\/land-of-the-free-short-story-by-judah-foster\/\" target=\"_blank\">READ IT HERE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2<sup>nd<\/sup> place<\/p>\n<p>Julia Nail, Grade 9<\/p>\n<p>Title: \u00a0\u201cAnyone Can Be Successful\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Summary: \u00a0After moving from Japan to America to seek help for her sister\u2019s illness, Kira finds success in something she didn&#8217;t think of before.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/teens\/2015\/anyone-can-be-successful-short-story-by-julia-nail\/\" target=\"_blank\">READ IT HERE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3rd place<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth Nail, Grade 9<\/p>\n<p>Title: \u00a0\u201cComing to America\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Summary: \u00a0A dual narrative of two immigrant girls, Eleanor from France and Patricia from Mexico, who are both afraid of being ostracized at the new school.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/teens\/2015\/coming-to-america-short-story-by-elizabeth-nail\/\" target=\"_blank\">READ IT HERE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">&#8220;My Family Story&#8221; Art Contest<\/h2>\n<p>Guidelines: \u00a0Submit a single frame illustration depicting your family story or what it means to be an American.
