\nOn Tuesday we explored the splishy, splashy world of ponds and wetlands. It was a lot of fun because with a Pond theme, there were lots of traditional children’s songs I could use and we sang them with a CD. First we made a beautiful picture out of ovals, rectangles, diamonds, and something I call “Pacmen” for lack of a better name:\n<\/p>\n

\nThen we played “I Spy” and found a duck, a turtle, and a frog, the main characters of our storytime today. We read an adorable photograph picture book called Swim, Duck, Swim<\/em><\/a> by Susan Lurie with photos by Murray Head. It’s important to note that research has shown babies respond well to books with real photographs in them, and that may sometimes be easier for a baby to process than an illustration. I also tried to help comprehension by having my duck puppet act out the story.\n<\/p>\n

\nThen we sang “Five Little Ducks” and counted down from five to one with a flannelboard:\n<\/p>\n

\nbut only four little ducks came swimming back…<\/p>\n

\nWe sang “Tickly Toddle” and then another song about ducks, bringing in an additional one with a feather on his back:\n<\/p>\n

\nWe did another flannelboard activity and song about Five Green and Speckled Frogs:\n<\/p>\n

\nOne jumped into the pool where it was nice and cool
\nThen there were four little speckled frogs.

\nThree green and speckled frogs sitting on a speckled log

\nWe did another tickle, this time about a turtle named Tiny Tim:\n<\/p>\n

I had a little turtle (make turtle with fist — thumb is the head)
\nHis name was Tiny Tim
\nI put him in the bathtub
\nTo see if he could swim.
\nHe drank up all the water (glub, glub)
\nHe ate up all the soap (munch, munch)
\nAnd when he woke up next morning
\nHe had bubbles in his throat

\nThen we read our second book, Turtle Splash<\/em><\/a> by Cathryn Falwell. We counted down from ten to one and learned about the other animals that live in ponds.\n<\/p>\n

I had a little turtle

\nAnd climbed up on the rocks

\nBut he didn’t catch me!
