The theme of this week’s Pajama Storytime is “Self Acceptance.” \u00a0Each story draws on themes of courage, friendship, and encouragement for self acceptance.<\/p>\n

The Monster Who Lost His Mean<\/em> and Freckleface Strawberry<\/em> are humorous stories–the first is a tale about a monster who is ostracized because he has lost his “mean,” and the latter about a seven year old girl who learns to accept her freckles. \u00a0Taking a less comical approach–though no less delightful–One<\/em> by Kathyrn Otoshi also explores the topic of bullying; while young readers learn about colors and numbers, they also learn about standing up for themselves and accepting each other’s differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fourth story is Square Cat<\/em>. \u00a0Based on the picture book by Elizabeth Schoonmaker, this story was adapted for the flannel board. \u00a0Eula is a square cat and wishes she was round. \u00a0Her round cat friends try to cheer her up by showing Eula just how great it is to be square.<\/p>\n

The craft below is also based on Square Cat<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The film we watched is “Spoon,” a story about a spoon who wishes he was another utensil, but eventually learns to accept himself. \u00a0The short film is based on Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s picture book of the same name.<\/p>\n

cardstock
\ncrayons or markers
\nscissors
\ntape or glue<\/p>\n

How to Make Them<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Print out square cat box template —square cat pdf<\/a><\/p>\n

For preschool-kinder aged kids, adult assistance will be needed for folding; pre-cutting and pre-folding may work as well. \u00a0For 1st-2nd grade kids, they should be able to cut and fold with little assistance.<\/p>\n

Instructions are on the printout:<\/p>\n

  1. Color the cat (face, sides)<\/li>\n
  2. Draw eyes, nose, mouth, whiskers, and feet<\/li>\n
  3. Cut along solid lines<\/li>\n
  4. Fold on dotted lines<\/li>\n
  5. Glue or tape together box<\/li>\n
  6. Tuck in tabs as noted<\/li>\n
  7. Curl and tape on tail<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
