Wild Baby<\/a> by Cori Doerrfeld is a new book, and since it was a bit long for our purposes I just abridged it a little. A baby monkey gets into trouble with his mama but smooths things over with a nice gift.<\/p>\n

Nursery Rhymes We Shared<\/h4>\n

Humpty Dumpty<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today, before we did our Letter of the Day, activity, we recited the Mother Goose rhyme “Humpty Dumpty” with a puppet:<\/p>\n

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
\nHumpty Dumpty had a great fall;
\nAll the king’s horses and all the king’s men
\nCouldn’t put Humpty together again.<\/p>\n

Pop Goes the Weasel<\/strong><\/p>\n

We did this rhyme with scarves. I told the kids that their empty hand is the “monkey,” and the hand holding the scarf is the “weasel.”<\/p>\n

All around the cobbler’s bench, the monkey chased the weasel. (Roll your hands, making one “chase” the other round and round. This flips the scarf around in a circular motion.)<\/em>
\nThe monkey thought it all in fun –
\nPop! goes the weasel! (Toss scarf into the air.)<\/em><\/p>\n

A penny for a spool of thread, a penny for a needle, (Roll hands.)<\/em>
\nThat’s the way the money goes –
\nPop! Goes the weasel! (Toss scarf into the air.)<\/em><\/p>\n

Five Pigs So Squeaky Clean<\/strong><\/p>\n

I’m sorry I kept forgetting the lyrics to this one! I kept getting all tongue-tied!<\/p>\n

\nCleanest you’ve ever seen
\nWanted to go outside and play

(Take a pig and flip it over to show it getting dirty. Repeat the rhyme with one fewer pig mentioned, until there are no more clean pigs)<\/p>\n

We watched “Kitten’s First Full Moon,” based on the book<\/a> by Kevin Henkes, on our Day of the Dead DVD<\/a>. I love this book, and I encouraged everyone to shout “Uh-oh!” everytime the kitten gets into an awkward or unfortunate situation. It happens to her a lot! But the only thing was this video was a little bit long. It reminded me that for toddlers, the ideal video length during a storytime is five minutes–that’s about how long their attention span lasts.<\/p>\n
