{"id":14517,"date":"2019-10-24T16:27:15","date_gmt":"2019-10-24T23:27:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/?p=14517"},"modified":"2019-10-26T10:31:22","modified_gmt":"2019-10-26T17:31:22","slug":"school-of-rockppl-summer-music-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/pasadena-library.net\/kids\/2019\/school-of-rockppl-summer-music-program\/","title":{"rendered":"School of Rock@PPL! ~ Summer Music Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What happens when you bring together 35 school age kids, a group of talented musicians, 27 guitars (electric and acoustic) and 5 keyboards?\u00a0 You get SCHOOL OF ROCK @ PPL!!<\/p>\n<p>For the second year in a row Pasadena Public library gave a group of kids (ages 10-16) a rock and roll experience they\u2019d never forget.\u00a0\u00a0Dr. Thomas Foster, Ambassador for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.littlekidsrock.org\/\">Little Kids Rock Foundation<\/a>\u00a0and professional jazz\/rock\/blues guitarist Kimberly (KC) Allison from <a href=\"http:\/\/starlinermusic.net\/\">Starliner Music<\/a>\u00a0worked in tandem to provide guitar and keyboard instruction.\u00a0 Dr Foster also taught the children a lesson on musical beats and rhythm.\u00a0 All of this culminated in a final group performance of &#8220;My Girl&#8221; by The Temptations. Program&#8217;s Structure<\/h2>\n<p>Our program began with a brief PowerPoint overview of the\u00a0history of rock and roll going back to its roots in blues and jazz, a discussion of the instruments needed to form the basic \u201crock\u201d band and an overview of tabs versus chords, acoustic versus electric guitars, pedal boards, and more.\u00a0 KC Allison also played a medley of songs to illustrate the evolution of rock music from the 1940s through the 2000s.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s listen to her rendition of Brian May&#8217;s solo in Queen&#8217;s <strong><em>We Will Rock You<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll notice the children participating in a rhythmic body percussion exercise in time to the beat of the music.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span concluded with KC Allison (lead guitar) and the library&#8217;s very own Derek Massengale (bass guitar), Larry Mudica (electric guitar) and Sebastian O&#8217;Brien (lead singer) performing a few songs as part of PPL&#8217;s first ever <em><strong>Rock and Roll<\/strong><\/em> band.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a bit of footage of them playing Chuck Berry&#8217;s &#8220;Johnny B.
