For our\u00a0fifth storytime of the winter session we read stories about colors!\u00a0 I used my different colored\u00a0scarves to introduce everyone to the colors of the rainbow!<\/p>\n

FUN FACT:\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Did you know that engaging in scarf play\u00a0actually helps your baby develop gross motor skills?\u00a0\u00a0Gross Motor (physical) skills require whole body movement and involve the large (core stabilising) muscles of the body to perform everyday functions, such as standing, walking, running, and sitting upright.\u00a0 Who knew that scarf play could be so athletic?\u00a0 Just have some scarves at the ready and put on some music.\u00a0 You and your toddler can\u00a0move your scarves to the beat!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

In Colors pop-up Peekaboo! <\/em><\/strong>published by D.K. Publishing each page brings a lift-the-flap peekaboo surprise!\u00a0 This is an\u00a0interactive book that teaches colors and animal identification.\u00a0 A yellow\u00a0duck, a red bird, a blue fish, a green turtle and a rainbow butterfly emerge in 3-D as each flap is lifted up.\u00a0 All babies love playing peekaboo and this book takes this simple game to another level!<\/p>\n

Cat’s Colors<\/strong><\/em> by Arlie Anderson is a great introduction to colors!\u00a0 We see a white cat on a cloudy, gray day doing gray-day things<\/em> BUT she has an idea!\u00a0 She decides to collect some colors!\u00a0 In true cat style, Cat meanders and finds all sorts of colors in nature and (lucky for Cat), they rub off on her!\u00a0 Eventually Cat has collected seven different colored spots.\u00a0 Just when things get interesting, she disappears inside\u00a0a bush.\u00a0 When we take a peek, there is a colorful surprise.\u00a0 (I won’t give it away.)<\/p>\n

MAKING RAINBOW STEW<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Take an apple;
\nput\u00a0it in the pot
\nStir and stir and stir\u00a0a lot!
\nShall we take it out now?\u00a0 What will it be?

Just repeat this chant substituting the other fruits and colors.<\/p>\n

Orange, yellow lemon, green pear, blue berries & purple grapes.<\/p>\n

When you\u2019re done, sing:<\/p>\n

Red and orange, yellow and green
\nBlue and purple colors are seen
\nPut them together, what will it be?
\nThe prettiest rainbow you ever did see!<\/p>\n

(a variation on the game we played during storytime)<\/p>\n

We have a problem. You see, we don\u2019t know which house the little mouse is hiding in. Will you help me find her?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s call for her:<\/strong><\/p>\n

(fill in the blank with one of the colors)<\/p>\n

\u201cLittle mouse, little mouse, are you in<\/strong> the <\/strong>[Point to<\/em>] ________ house?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

(Using sound effects slowly peel back all the houses but leave four on the board<\/em>)<\/p>\n

Hmmm \u2026 she wasn\u2019t in any of those<\/em> houses. Maybe if we <\/strong>whisper<\/strong> she\u2019ll come out. [Softer<\/em>]:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cLittle mouse, little mouse, are you in<\/strong> the <\/strong>[Point to<\/em>] ________ house?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

(Pull back another empty house<\/em>)<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s try this house:<\/strong><\/p>\n

(Peel back the house to reveal the little mouse<\/em>)<\/p>\n

There she is!<\/strong><\/em> Hello little mouse!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Squeak-squeak!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s make sure she\u2019s the only one, okay?<\/strong><\/p>\n

(Slowly peel off the remaining two houses with exaggerated SFX)<\/em><\/p>\n

No. No more mice. She\u2019s the only one! Thanks for your help everybody \u2014 I don\u2019t\u2019 think I could have found her without you!<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you have any colorful scarves at home, you can use them to teach your child about colors.\u00a0\u00a0Colorful scarves\u00a0are also a great way to engage in sensory play with your toddler!\u00a0 An added bonus?\u00a0 Moving with the scarf helps with development of your toddler’s gross motor skills.\u00a0 (If you don’t have scarves you\u00a0can\u00a0use different colored construction paper\u00a0cut\u00a0into strips.)<\/p>\n
