Welcome to Pasadena’s 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge!<\/h2>\n

This campaign is a self-paced goal designed to promote early literacy and help children with lifelong educational and occupational success.\u00a0But you don’t have to do this challenge alone!\u00a0Pasadena Public Library will help you each step of the way with free books, Storytime, and even prizes to encourage your little ones (while supplies last)!<\/p>\n

Information for Parents and Caregivers<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

What is 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten? <\/span><\/b>The concept is simple: read 1,000 books to your child before they start kindergarten. This multi-year (or month) early learning initiative helps children gain familiarity with printed books, expand vocabulary and enter kindergarten ready to learn.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Do I need to attend a <\/span><\/b>Kindergarten, Here I Come <\/span><\/i><\/b>campaign Info Session to participate in the program?<\/span><\/b> No, though we highly encourage you to. The kit you\u2019ll first receive contains a wealth of information that may be overwhelming to sort through. The Info Session may help reduce anxiety and contains some great information about starting Kindergarten. (see more about K, Here I Come below)<\/span><\/p>\n

Who can participate?\u00a0 <\/span><\/b>Any child who has not yet started kindergarten.\u00a0 That means newborns all the way up to your Pre-K or TK child.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How long will the program take?<\/span><\/b> The program is self-paced and will depend on how often you read together. It may be as short as a few months or as long as a few years.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Do books read at Storytime count?\u00a0<\/span><\/b> Absolutely! Any book that your child has read counts, as many times as it is read.\u00a0 Example: one book read 5 times before bedtime counts as 5 books.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My child has finished the program. Can they start again? <\/span><\/b>Congratulations on your child\u2019s reading! While we love the enthusiasm, the program is limited to one time per child. However, there are many other public libraries in the area offering the program as well. How do we participate? <\/span><\/b>Read to your child and track. Each time you reach 100 books, visit your local Pasadena library branch and show your Tracking Sheet or let staff know you participated online.
