Books We Shared

Breakfast… Uh-oh! Bathtime… Uh-oh! An adorable toddler finds all kinds of occasions for using the phrase in Rachel Isadora’s Uh-oh!

Wild Baby by Cori Doerrfeld is a new book, and since it was a bit long for our purposes I just abridged it a little. A baby monkey gets into trouble with his mama but smooths things over with a nice gift.

Nursery Rhymes We Shared

Humpty Dumpty

Today, before we did our Letter of the Day, activity, we recited the Mother Goose rhyme “Humpty Dumpty” with a puppet:

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall;
All the king’s horses and all the king’s men
Couldn’t put Humpty together again.

Pop Goes the Weasel

We did this rhyme with scarves. I told the kids that their empty hand is the “monkey,” and the hand holding the scarf is the “weasel.”

All around the cobbler’s bench, the monkey chased the weasel. (Roll your hands, making one “chase” the other round and round. This flips the scarf around in a circular motion.)
The monkey thought it all in fun –
Pop! goes the weasel! (Toss scarf into the air.)

A penny for a spool of thread, a penny for a needle, (Roll hands.)
That’s the way the money goes –
Pop! Goes the weasel! (Toss scarf into the air.)

Five Pigs So Squeaky Clean

I’m sorry I kept forgetting the lyrics to this one! I kept getting all tongue-tied!

(Credit: storytimekatie)

Five pigs so squeaky clean
Cleanest you’ve ever seen
Wanted to go outside and play
Oink! Oink!
One jumped into the mud
Landed with a big THUD
Then there were four clean squeaky pigs!

(Take a pig and flip it over to show it getting dirty. Repeat the rhyme with one fewer pig mentioned, until there are no more clean pigs)

Five Little Monkeys

(take one monkey away each verse)

Five little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
Mama called the doctor
And the doctor said
No more monkeys jumping on the bed

Four little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped her head
Mama called the doctor
And the doctor said,
No more monkeys jumping on the bed

Three little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
Mama called the doctor
And the doctor said,
No more monkeys jumping on the bed

Two little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped her head
Mama called the doctor
And the doctor said,
No more monkeys jumping on the bed

One little monkey jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
Mama called the doctor
And the doctor said,
No more monkeys jumping on the bed

Letter of the Day

Our Letter of the Day was U. We did a big U in the air and talked about U words and the two main U vowel sounds.

Action Songs & Bounces We Shared

Open Shut Them

Open shut them, open shut them.
Give a little clap, clap, clap.
Open shut them, open shut them.
Place them on your lap, lap, lap.
Creep them, crawl them
Creep them, crawl them
Right up to your chin, chin, chin
Open up your little mouth… Buuuuuuuuuuut…
Do not let them in!

Itsy-Bitsy Spider

The itsy-bitsy spider
Climbed up the water spout
Down came the rain
And washed the spider out
Out came the sun
And dried up all the rain
And the itsy-bitsy spider
Climbed up the spout again

Music from CDs We Shared

Did you know singing and dancing improve brain function?  Here are some of the songs/dances on CD that we used in storytime to power up our early literacy with some great blood flow!

“Clap Everybody and Say Hello” from Sally Go Round the Sun by Kathy Reid-Naiman

“Pop Goes the Weasel” from Animal Songs and Stories by Susie Tallman and friends

“Goodbye in the Bayou” from Bon Voyage by Jazzy Ash

“Popcorn” and “Goodbye Song” from Shining Like a Star by Laura Doherty

Video We Shared

We watched “Kitten’s First Full Moon,” based on the book by Kevin Henkes, on our Day of the Dead DVD. I love this book, and I encouraged everyone to shout “Uh-oh!” everytime the kitten gets into an awkward or unfortunate situation. It happens to her a lot! But the only thing was this video was a little bit long. It reminded me that for toddlers, the ideal video length during a storytime is five minutes–that’s about how long their attention span lasts.
