Books We Shared

Breakfast… Uh-oh! Bathtime… Uh-oh! An adorable toddler finds all kinds of occasions for using the phrase in Rachel Isadora’s Uh-oh!

Kids are little scientists, aren’t they? I remember when all my daughter wanted to do was drop something from her high chair and watch her grandpa pick it up and hand it to her. Then she’d drop it again and laugh while, like a loyal pet, grandpa retrieved the item again. Talk about being wrapped around baby’s little finger!

In this book by Sarah Weeks and illustrated by Sam Williams, a bunny experiments with gravity and throws things “Overboard!

Nursery Rhymes We Shared

Humpty Dumpty

Today, before we did our Letter of the Day, activity, we recited the Mother Goose rhyme “Humpty Dumpty” with a puppet:

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall;
All the king’s horses and all the king’s men
Couldn’t put Humpty together again.

Pop Goes the Weasel

We did this rhyme with scarves. I told the kids that their empty hand is the “monkey,” and the hand holding the scarf is the “weasel.”

All around the cobbler’s bench, the monkey chased the weasel. (Roll your hands, making one “chase” the other round and round. This flips the scarf around in a circular motion.)
The monkey thought it all in fun –
Pop! goes the weasel! (Toss scarf into the air.)

A penny for a spool of thread, a penny for a needle, (Roll hands.)
That’s the way the money goes –
Pop! Goes the weasel! (Toss scarf into the air.)

Five Pigs So Squeaky Clean

I’m sorry I kept forgetting the lyrics to this one! I kept getting all tongue-tied!

(Credit: storytimekatie)

Five pigs so squeaky clean
Cleanest you’ve ever seen
Wanted to go outside and play
Oink! Oink!
One jumped into the mud
Landed with a big THUD
Then there were four clean squeaky pigs!

(Take a pig and flip it over to show it getting dirty. Repeat the rhyme with one fewer pig mentioned, until there are no more clean pigs)

Five Little Monkeys

(take one monkey away each verse)

Five little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
Mama called the doctor
And the doctor said
No more monkeys jumping on the bed

Four little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped her head
Mama called the doctor
And the doctor said,
No more monkeys jumping on the bed

Three little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
Mama called the doctor
And the doctor said,
No more monkeys jumping on the bed

Two little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped her head
Mama called the doctor
And the doctor said,
No more monkeys jumping on the bed

One little monkey jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
Mama called the doctor
And the doctor said,
No more monkeys jumping on the bed

Letter of the Day

Our Letter of the Day was U. We did a big U in the air and talked about U words and the two main U vowel sounds.
